AMD to Launch Two Low-Power Desktop CPUs in November

DigiTimes made today the early announcement of two low-power AMD desktop processors that are to appear sometime in November. The Athlon 2650E and Athlon X2 3250E will both be part of the company's UVC (Ultra-Value Client) product line targeting OEMs. The single core 2650E CPU will have a core frequency of 1.6GHz and TDP of 15W, while the dual-core Athlon X2 3250e will have a core frequency of 1.5GHz and TDP of 22W. The two CPUs will be fabbed on a 65nm process and will initially be provided to OEM customers only. Manufacturers like ASUSTeK Computer, Acer and Shuttle, are expected to show up machines powered by the two processors in December. In additional news, AMD is also planning to launch a triple-core Phenom X3 8850 CPU using a 65nm process in early October. The CPU will feature a core frequency of 2.5GHz and a maximum TDP of 95W. The company will also launch a new Black Edition CPU in December.

In light of the lack of serious AMD processors on the horizon, I can't help but wonder if their strategy is to temporarily survive by targeting low power consumption processors for the Corporate end users. I don't know about the rest of the world, but in Corporate America energy consumption and "green" philosophies are on the rise big time! There are even tax incentives available to Corporations who conserve a specified amount of energy.

Perhaps that is their short term strategy? Any thoughts?

i think this is a very clever move on AMD's part. They are being trounced by Intel at the higher end of the spectrum, so why not make super efficient lower end chips? They will appeal very highly to places such as schools and work places, and remember, everyones trying to go green, and this is the time to jump on the bandwagon and make some profit out of saving the planet!

Nice one AMD

It will be wonderful if they can come out similar wattage Optys for the server world. That will really save loads of energy.

the x2 could easily be rebranded a low power opteron, the diffrence between the X2 and the Opteron is name only, and cache at times. But a 22W 512k L2 server server chip prolly wouldn't sell well either.

No I want a F3 Windsor with 1MB cache per core at minimum 2 ghz and at 35w TDP. Guess that is too much.

This will help AMD compete or get a head start for the i7 processors. Despite the fact that AMD might be sitting ducks, they will still fight with faster and more efficient X2 processors. Also the fact that Alienware is starting to notice what AMD is really achieving for mobile CPUs. If AMD keeps digging, they will definitely dominate the mobile CPU market, while making a truce to the desktop CPU market.
