Two Quick Questions

Hi, ive just got two questions that have been bugging me.

1) Why do people build second PCs (so they have 2, 3, 4+ PCs in total)? I have a spare case and afew components and was pondering reasons.

2) Does a Powercolor HD3870x2 GDDR4 (£136) work with a Powercolor HD3870 GDDR4 in crossfire on x8 link? And would it be worth it over a 4850? Playing at 1440x900.

Thanks in advance.

1. The reason most build second rigs is to use it for web surfing and downloading. If you bench and so forth, it draws a lot of power. Not a lot of people can afford to have a benching rig that does it all because of how the power company is R@ping us with extra stuff that they do wrong.
So, in all it's to use when ether your just web surfing or when that master rig is down.

2.

They don't have yet the 4870x2... but if you can see the 3870x2 was able to pair with the 3870 via crossfire X... so it might be working...

CrossfireX

Its all up to the person on if it's worth it... I don't care for the all the eye candy but some do...

at that resolution, my 8800GTS can play anything at full 8x/16x max fps, except for WIC and Crysis, which is playable...

I have a second rig becuase I bought a new case, psu, gfx card, chips, ram etc... so i decided to set another one up so that if I have mates round we can play on the same server together... and its useful to have around when something go's wrong with my main rig

on a 19" screen 1440X900 crossfire is way overkill... specially a 3870X2 + 3870.... one should be more than enough

You would need a power supply upgrade to run those two cards..

A single 3870x2 or HD4850 is more than enough for that res.
Is your 3870 not enough as it is?

Um, for folding of course, right? This could be the only conceivable reason. JK, I have 3 rigs folding full time and I want to build a 4th to game on.

Some time of work that would keep the pc running loaded 24/7, like F@H mentioned above. Or possibly they have a big computer that stays at home with a big case and fancy cooling etc, and a second computer that's probably less powerful and cooler running with smaller cooling devices and in a smaller, easier to carry case so they can take it along to lan parties etc. Or maybe they have one simply in case thier big computer blows up... a backup machine. Maybe it's a HTPC type thing that handles downloading and has a shitload of hard drive space, using it as a storage/home theater box. I would like to have one just for downloading/watching movies on cause of all the privacy intrusive bullshit people want to secretly install on your computer along with a game or something.
