Didn't give me any problems at all. Everything worked fine. Maybe you just got a bad install?

Since upgrading to XP3, Windows has never been so good and stable for me, As WileE says, probably a bad install, sometimes it does happen, crap when it does but not too difficult to remedy.

If it was compatible with 2, it should be compatible with 3, I thought everything in XP was backwards compatible??

You probably just have to reinstall style XP, or update it. SP3 installs a newer version of the uxtheme.dll. Google sp3 uxtheme.dll patch.

Another program that has problems with sp3 is Diskeeper 8. First time you try and use it it gives an error message (something about Microsoft Management Console), which you can chose to always ignore. Seems to work OK after that though.

I haven't had any issues with SP3...isn't SP3 just a bunch of security updates mostly anyways?

Yeah, but it does update some core files to newer versions. uxtheme.dll and tcpip.dll come to mind immediately. So if you have a patched uxtheme to use 3rd party windows themes, or you patched your TCP connection limit to be higher, you have to redo them in sp3. It also reinstates Windows File Protection, if you had that disabled in SP2.

I've had no issues when upgrading to SP3 on the computers at work.
The only issue I have run across is that on a fresh install of XP with SP2 followed by an upgrade to SP3 the windows update program fails to install new updates. The reason for this is that the WUPS2.DLL file is not being registered. It is easy to fix for anyone having this problem Stop the update service net stop wuauserv Register wups2.dll regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wups2.dll regsvr32 %windir%\syswow64\wups2.dll (for 64 bit systems) Start the update service net start wuauserv This has worked every time for me. If it does not work for you see this support page from MS
