System Specs

Tegra SoC Designs based on GeForce 6 series

Tegra is NVIDIA's System on a Chip (SoC) platform. It takes NVIDIA's supreme expertise in the field of visual computing and architectural finesse to SoC that is projected to have a large market in the near future in several industries, mainly consumer electronics and automobiles. Heavyweights in the automobile industry such as Daimler AG (Mercedes Benz), FIAT Group (Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Fiat, Lancia, Maserati), V.A.G. group (Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, Seat, Skoda, VW) have lobbied around the Terga technology to be used to enhance their products.

As automobiles manufacturers venturing into a realm of new technology of compact computing, they would prefer proven and stable technologies from NVIDIA over future tech. For this matter, NVIDIA has derived some versions of the graphics processor part of Tegra on the GeForce 6 series. It makes it fully DirectX 9.0c compatible and capable of running up to three or more displays. Some variants NVIDIA plans to sell V.A.G. group includes a GPU derived from GeForce 9600 GT albeit much lower speeds (since it's not required to work to its potential). Futuremark has already showcased its 3D dashboard software for Audi which could harness the power of Tegra to display a futuristic dashboard panel that provides drivers with information on the car's operation along with maps and guidance in 3D.

Industry sources tell that the next-generation Tegra will add certain features from the GeForce GTX 280, such as full support for CUDA and dual-precision FP64 processing. The hardware is likely to be based on a single 8-shader processor node, which would result in about 30 GFlops of processing power. Expect the GeForce GTX for the automotive industry to arrive as a daughterboard initially.

All digital guages displayed on a digital flat panel in the dash instead of normal guages. A really great and cool idea, until something goes wrong...

you are right guys the more complex electronics get the more possible for something to go wrong let alone the drivers you would need for those things. i believe that finally this will be a reality but for now its just PR.

I keep reading people talk about how something could go wrong with the display, but what's from stopping a person from pulling over and restarting their car? Besides that, this chip has been around long enough that I'm sure nvidia will be able to provide a very stable setup.

We marvel at this now, but imagine 10 years from now when the car's GPU is liquid cooled by the car's cooling system

I had no problems with my 6800 crashing or causing problems when I had it. Every problem I had was because of my A8N-SLI board. And they didn't say Nvidia was making the chipsets ; p

I agree, I manage servers and networks but my truck is still carburated with no computer at all, LoL. (Now my car and Motorcycle are a different story but they don't matter as much)

If companies like those listed above (well most of them anyway) don't have a form of backup system for those prices, that is pathetic.

You must not have seen some motorcyle displays.

Specially at the price that this SoC chip was said to be released. Cheap, cheap, cheap. They could use 100 redundant Tegra chips and the car's price wouldn't have to change one bit. Well compared to the prices of a car, some cents per chip are negligible isn't it?

Anyway, just to respond to your first paragraph, Nvidia WOULD BE MAKING the chipsets as Tegra (btarunr... ,) is a SoC. System on a Chip = CPU+GPU+chipset on a single chip. I know you know it, I'm just refreshing it in your mind.

Finally! We've pretty much have been using the same flimsy pcb's and electronic components for guages in automobiles since the 60's. I'm all for a LCD display that's fully customizable to the drivers needs.

Yup. About 15 years ago my parents had a van with digital readouts on the dash. Granted this was 15 years ago, but the dashes became worthless after a year. Speedometer was about 15 mph off, and the gas tank was never measured correctly. The fact that it was domestic probably had something to do with it as well...

Those are sensor errors, not display errors.

Bah! I'll stick with my reliable -mechanical- guages in my truck. I recently blew a fuse in the dash when a wire shorted out. No lights, signal blinkers, or charging system, but mechanical gauges still worked. Drove 2 hours home on the battery, listening to the CD player. Try THAT with a new Mercedes. Or a new Suzuki for that matter...

I think I would rather have analog tachs and speedometers w/ digital for everything else. There's just something more satisfying watching your speed increase along with the revs on an actual display rather than a digital layout (e.g. I love the way the new tach is set up in the Civic but I absolutely hate the digital speedometer). But then again, if a company/someone were to set up an all digital display similar to the Lamborghini Reventón's I wouldn't complain at all :P

I don't understand why people are complaining about the complexity. If we all had a mentality like that about cars, everything would still be carburated.
