SATA is hot swappable. Boot the the computer without the SATA cable plugged in but leave the power. When Windows successfully boots plug the SATA cable in. What happens then? If it doesn't crash your computer you can try to use a program to recover the data. I can't remember any good ones to suggest so maybe someone else can tell you. If you cannot access the hard drive using your computer, because the data recovery software does not work or for other reasons, but there is absolutely vital information on it you can send it off to a lab that can recover information (very expensive).

If you can't access it at all you won't be able to get data off of it. If it freezes every time you use it you are probably out of luck. You should get a nice backup system going when you replace that drive.

I have had problems with a same 250gb seagate hd. It took a while to figure out what the problem was with my hd. I found out that it did not get enough power,I had 2 fans connected on the same wire and there was not enough power for the hd. I have had major problems copying files, formatting partitions resulted in errors.
Now I have have connected the fans somewhere else and the hdd runs fine now. Unfortunately it has some damaged blocks now, which cannot be repared.I'm able to return this hdd for a new one but the os boot files are on this disk and an xp x64 installation. |

Sata is only hot swappable if you are running it in Raid or AHCI.
But what he said will work.. Another option is if you have a usb - sata enclosure or adapter.
