Diablo 2 Problems on Vista

Today I decided to try and run my old copy of Diablo 2 on Vista. At first the game would not even open, I could see the process in task manager, but nothing would show up on the screen. I then tried to run in compatibility mode with XP, nothing. I then was able to get the game started by disabling desktop composition in the shortcut options, but when the game gets to the menu it is VERY slow. It only responds every 30 seconds or so. I believe it is a graphical problem due to the fact that it runs in windowed mode without a problem.

Anyone have any ideas?

I've been playing Diablo II LoD for a while in Vista 64, but i've set it to compatibility to XP: i don't run it in Window mode.

@ first, it says there's a known compatibility problem but i "tell" Vista to run anyway and check the box that says something like "Never show this again".

I'm running 2 copies in my PC right now: 1 in each user.

In windowed mode it is very small since you cannot change the resolution and it is 640x480 so I would prefer to find a solution to the problem.

I also just noticed that when I run it in XP compatibility mode I get an unhandled exception error before the game gets to the menu.

Under the compatiblity tab, i have "disable desktop composition" and "run this program as administrator" ticked. Nothing else.

D2 is working fine for me here.

I had installed this game on vista before and had this problem I knew that I had solved it, but I didn't know how. After I ran the video test there was an option to use direct3d or directdraw and I immediately remembered that the solution was to change it to directdraw. So that worked and fixed the problem. Thanks for your help.

Your welcome!

When changing driver versions, just to be on the safe side, re-run the video test.

Which explains why it was so slow in 2D mode: lack of 3D acceleration.
