Recommended Power Supply
Hey guys, alright I'm finally gonna take your word for it and get a better psu (for better overclocking, cleaner power). Well my bro's got this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817101513 and he won't let me trade him (he doesn't need a psu like that, he games and doesn't even know how the games work). So can you guys tell me what specs to look for in a psu (for AGP single graphics card and massive overclocking needs on a socket 939 board, along with plenty of lights and fans) like wattage, rails, fans, whatever. And I'd definitely prefer something with blue lighted fans, and even better, cable wraps (green). Thanks guys

seems nice a nice psu,
the good things to look for in a psu are usualy a nice amp value on the 12v, 25 amp minimum, 28-30 for best results, when looking for the awtt value, a 450 watt will do nicly for a non sli set up, you might want 500 or 550 watt if you plan on having a high end video card like a 6800/7800/X8x0/x1800 or have a large amount of usb periperals or harddrives, one thing about watt value, make sure that the declared max wattage value is sustained and not peak, a 450 watt peak PSU wont get you far, plus will loose efficiency (watt deliverd/watt consumed x100, result in %), the less efficiency, the more heat the psu is delivering, means shorter psu life, unstable voltages and as a result, possible damage to your machine, PFC is a must, active PFC is highly recommended, also check for good cooling, heat reduces efficiency plus most transistors specs change while exposed to different temperatures then the ones under which they were design to work, excess heat will lead to voltage and amp variations, tegan, FSP, OCZ, Bequiet, thermaltake, their all good brands, but as a final word i would recommend that when you find several candidates, you go and google up reviews on those PSU´s, see how they handle in tests and if they fit your needs, dont just blindly trust the store and manufacturer, there is no such thing as an expencive PSU if its good, you´re paying for peace of mind and a machine that works well, just make sure the psu you buy is worth the money you lay down, |

The OCZ modstream has silver sleeved cables and a blue 120mm fan and is supposed to be pretty quiet, the only drawback to this PSU is a single 12V rail, dual 12V is nice because the CPU gets its very own 12V supply and all the other 12V stuff in your system shares the other one.
The powerstream has cables with black sleeving and silver in some cases, I have a powerstream 600 in one computer around here and it's a little loud for my taste but it's a solid PSU. The new powerstream SLI editions have blue fans versus the green ones in the old regular powerstreams. http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/power_management/ edit: added link |

Alright thanks guys, but I can only afford up to (at MOST) $60 for this thing. I found 2 others with higher wattage (500w) and dual-12v rails for $50 to $60. The aspire looks childish but it does look just like that Puma.

I personally would go with the rosewill, it has lots of vent holes and a 120mm fan so it should be quiet and dual +12v, plus it's cheaper too.

Thanks guys, very much. Think I'm going Rosewill for the 500w, I'm thinking all that hardware is gonna take PLENTY of power (6 cold cathode's, 9 fans with LEDs, massive overclock on CPU (Opteron 148), socket 939 motherboard, 6800GT AGP, 4 drives HD/Optical), so the Puma's out. Thanks again guys, I would have probably bought something just as bad as my old one without you guys.
