Best this generation games?

Hey, I want to tell you guys that F.E.A.R. is a masterpiece, a work of art, flawless in every way. I mean graphics, impossibly good. physics, crazy realistic. AI, unbelievable. Gameplay, as good as Halo 1. Fear factor, literally pure genius. How is it possible to catch a guy who's seen every type of scary game, movie, show, house, and halloween place, off guard every single time something happens? Geniuses, that's all, the creators are geniuses. And ripping people's body parts off REALISTICALLY?!?! Shooting people and watching them die like it's a cinematic but it's real gameplay? Watching AI and somehow losing track of where they are? All those things I have never seen done even remotely well in a game before, and F.E.A.R. pulled them all off perfectly, or better. Other than Earthbound on the SNES, F.E.A.R. is my favorite game of ALL time.

So my question is, what is YOUR favorite this generation game? As in, ultra-realistic graphics type games (Doom 3, Quake 4, Farcry, FEAR, Half Life 2, many less popular games, etc.). Thanks guys

Half Life 2 and Far Cry are my favorite games of all time. Each one having its different advantages, I couldnt decide between them.

Second would be Desert Combat mod for BF1942. Although I dont play it anymore, it basically perfected the concept of a modern warfare MOFPS (massive online fps)

Doom 3 doesnt even come in my top 20.

FEAR seems cool.. but it has such a crappily running engine I dont think its worth trying to run on my comp.

Certainly FEAR is the best game of the year although it lags a bit.
(the atmosphere is great).
The next would be Fable The Lost Chapters
3rd is Gene Troopers
(nobody knows this genious game although it has a grav-gun like weapon and a physics engine like hl2)
4th is UT2004
The Far Cry mod RALLY PSYCHOS is one of my favourite multiplayer mods

hard to find a game that really stands out..

fear.. very clever AI.. too much running around lost in boring office type buildings..

painkiller.. i like that cos it was just mindless killing hords of brainless enemies.. he he

half-life.. very good but nothng special..

doom 3.. i thought it was crap but quite liked it when i got into it.. too much inside room stuff but they were more interesting "rooms" than the fear inside room stuff.. and it makes u jump at times..

quake 4.. pretty.. but again to much inside room stuff.. just another "game"..

flat out.. brillaint.. great fun.. dont take itself too seriously..

pariah.. lots of outside scenes kinda reminded me of halo.. i did play it all the way thru.. grfx so so.. but it seems the pretties and outside scenarios dont go together.. the machines cant handle both..

contract jack.. old looking but good fun.. i played that one all the way thru.. strangely enough fear reminded me of contract jack with pretty grfx..

come to the conclusion that todays pretty grfx isnt worth the very old return to "inside room " games like they used to be several years ago when the software exceeded the hardware.. in some way todays games have taken a backward step..

older games that stood out.. stick in my memory.. giants citizen kabuto and armed and dangerous by the same people.. nothing has had the impact that the original quake did thow.. he he he

oh.. forgot one.. the original need for speed played on a voodo i grfx card.. that had an impact he he he

changed my mind about the best current game.. he he he..

call of duty 2.. no roaming aound lost just to pad the game out.. no hunting for silly health packs or ammo.. no having to poke in every corner/box or whatever in every room in case u miss something.. regular auto saves.. loads of AI buddies.. beats the hell out of going thru single player games all on your own.. loads of outside activity.. nice grafix.. the game pretty well has everything..

kinda shame that it has to be a WWII type game for all the extra AI helper dudes (mates) to appear.. it stirkes me that all FPSs should have AI buddies as the norm.. fear.. doom 3.. quake 4.. it also makes me wonder just why they dont have em..

in the doom 3 film they had a "team".. its funny how they dont feel the same about the actual games.. all good shooters should have a team.. he he he.. if a team works in a bloody film it would do the same in a game..

okay they dont actually help that much and they do sometimes get in the way.. but the game is a lot more entertaining with em than without em..

just played cod2 thru and had forgotten just how good the first one was..

Oh yeah, teamplay makes a game for me. I never play a game after I beat it until Halo, because the Co-op in that is great. I wish Doom3 was co-op (on Xbox at least). I didn't like HL2 for AI teams, it was pretty primitive like it has been for the past 10 years, but now people get out of the way. AI for teamplay is really great in Quake 4 and FEAR (at least the enemies work together), that's the next-gen teamplay and it's great.

yep in fear the enemy has good teamplay.. cant fault it for that.. i spose its just lazyness on the game writers part.. wwii type games kinda have to have fellow solders so we get em.. elsewhere we dont..

the other reason i think is the little room/corridor factor thats all too prominent in some of these later games.. .. there aint room for more than just u and few enemies..

anyways.. having just played painkiller.. halflife.. contract jack.. pariah.. quake 4.. fear.. doom 3.. cod2.. i have run out of shooters.. he he he..

any none multiplayer recommendations..???

I think a lot of people have, or maybe they did in the "best since 2000" thread.

Also, about the military shooters, that's why I don't play them anymore, because first off they're waaaay too repetitive, I mean how many theatres and missions do we need before they stop WWII shooters?? Same weapons, same enemies, same environments, same vehicles, same effects, and worst of all, same old AI in EVERY game. Why doesn't AI in those games actually fire when there's a target, or take cover quick enough, or actually take cover, or maybe run when they should. I'm not saying WWII shooters are bad games, if I did I'd be wrong because millions of copies are still being sold. It's just my personal opinion, I'd have a different one if one developer could just break ground and pop out some Quake 4-like AI, then it'd be a whole other ballgame. Just had to mention.

I'm thinking of getting COD2 now. How good is the AI? I thought it was just like every other game out there so I haven't given it a look. I have more games with stupid bots than I'd care to count.

i think the cod2 AI is okay.. bit hard to judge reaally.. cos in some ways i like hordes of mindless zombie types to shoot the crap out of.. i loved painkiller and they were about as mindless as u can get..

the fear ai is the best there is i think.. about as human like as i have seen.. they even run off at times.. and refuse to come and get u when told to.. "f-ck off i aint going in there hes just wiped out an entire squad" is often heard.. he he

i played cod1.. thought it very good.. tried the add-on pack thought it was just more of the same but far too hard.. never bothered to finish it.. i started cod2 with "more of the same" kinda thoughts but soon got into the game its that good.. in spite of it being wwii.. he he..

in retropsect i should have played cod2 at a harder level.. it was far to easy to rush in quake style dance around poke em in the belly with your machine gun and kill a whole bunch in one go.. the game dosnt have a shotgun.. but at close range the machine guns behave very much like the classic shotguns.. pretty much instant enemy death.. not realistic in the slightest but good fun.. if u are more into simulations it needs playing on the harder levels.. on the level i played cod2 on its a lot easier than cod1 and the auto saves are far more frequent.. bit more arcade like.. which i personally like.. cant be doing with games that call themselves "simulations"..

The AI in FEAR is pretty good and got better towards the end. I wish they were that smart and tough throughout the whole game. They seem to talk too much though. You knew they were up ahead or if they wern't all dead because they always had something to say. Way better than older games though. I dont think any of them just stood there and let me kill them. Far Cry was good too. If you shot at one they all came after your ass .

Hell yeah, FEAR AI is just plain crazy. Hopefully every new game will build off that engine, and hopefully everyone will build off and improve the graphics engine too. There's gonna be a whole new element to games when they start getting as human as FEAR has gotten.

far cry stood out.. still does in some ways.. i had problems with the long periods tween autosaves thow.. it got a bit boring having to go so far back and do it all over again several with some of the harder bits.. i though all games should have the quick save option..

cod2 has it about right thow.. no quick saves but frequent autosaves.. i kinda like that.. cod2 breaks the molds in several ways.. no health backs u just need to hunker down and u auto recover.. quick and often auto saves.. overall i recon they got it about right..

the biggest problem i had with fear was too much roaming around lost looking for the next door out of a few dozen identical doors to go thru.. he he.. same with doom 3.. too much going round in circles totally lost.. praps its just me has a lousy sense of game directiion.. dunno..

gonna have a go at seriouse sam 2 and see what i recon..

I have to say, FEAR is really annoying with those hard-to-find hard-to-reach areas. I'm only on about the 7th mission and I've been stuck for about half as long as I've played the game, and at least once a mission.

i recon we need a thread about what we dont like in games.. he he..

too much going round in circles lost in repetitive (identical ?) scenery just to pad the game out and make it play longer would come top of my list..

fear does get better once u move out of those boring office blocks.. u dont get lost and have to go round in circle for half an hour quite so often...
