Hynix 7GT/s GDDR5 Chip to Make it to Major SKUs, R700 Included

Sources in the industry point out that the 7 GT/s GDDR5 memory chip made by Hynix (model: H5GQ1H24AFR), which was announced earlier in this week, would make it to several major graphics board SKUs by both AMD and NVIDIA. The two companies have chosen TSMC and its 40nm fabrication process as the foundry partner for their upcoming 40nm graphics processors, namely AMD RV870 and NVIDIA GT212.

Both these chips would feature GDDR5 memory bus capabilities, and there are indications of the 7 GT/s DRAM chip being incorporated into graphics boards based on these GPUs. Additionally, there is also word that AMD will be using the said DRAM chip in its current flagship graphics card, the Radeon HD 4870 X2 in the near future. Both AMD and NVIDIA are expected to have taped out their 40nm GPU designs within Q1, 2009.

Right now, Hynix. Samsung has a 50nm fab process going but hasn't come out with any chip/numbers yet.

Who cares: as long as they have competition, much like ATI VS nVidia, prices will be low and that's all that matters

HTC only speaks the truth.

Competition is great when things like this comes out of it.

Fact is though - it's pushing the boundaries even further. Even if it quantity first, quality will soon follow when they can make great use of the new tech.

There's truth in your words: i grant you that.

The "who cares" part is only relevant if all brands have equal quality.

about QUality part etc, i have old machine as main rig, Trying to overclock it, CPU i know will overclock well, but the chipset i have gets way too hot and starts to V Drop at anything past 2200MHz, thus system locks hard and i have to reset, Reason i know this is i shot the chipset while loaded and the CPU loaded with a Temp gun and verified the temps of the mobo detection, sure enough chipset runs hot, im thinking a heatsink upgrade is in order along with VRM cooling, and maybe replacement of Caps (serviceable) with the non liquid dielectric alum caps, all in due time. On video cards, i have a dell xps 9100 laptop with 9800 256 and i believe it uses samsung chips, well to my surprise the GPU gets 100 MHz additional oc along with the ram, so about 351/300 oc to 459/416, talk about a killer oc for a laptop card, gaming stable.

Anyone have any idea when this memory will show up on the 4870x2? I was just about to make the purchase but may hold off provided this makes it on a 4870x2 card by January.

"Hynix 7GT/s GDDR5 Chip to Make it to Major SKUs, R700 and GT212 Included"

Major SKUs = cards in the future. R700 got special mention since it's a current product which will be using these chips when they come out (indicating even current products could get their memory fix with these chips). For this reason, I didn't mention RV870 either.
