Xbox 360 Registers Biggest Black Friday in Its History, Outsells PS3 by 3-to-1 Ratio

Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system kicked off the holidays with record-breaking console sales on one of the biggest shopping weekends of the year in the U.S. Retailers reported Xbox 360 console sales over the Black Friday weekend were on pace to beat previous years, outselling the PlayStation 3 by a three-to-one ratio and estimating a 25 percent increase from Xbox 360 Black Friday sales figures from 2007.
Strong game sales rounded out a historic Black Friday for Xbox 360, with record-paced software sales continuing for key Microsoft titles, such as “Gears of War 2,” “Fable II,” and “Lips.” Xbox 360 continues to have the highest game attach rate of any console at 8.1 games per console.


“We entered into the Black Friday sales period with cautious optimism, knowing that dollar for dollar, Xbox 360 offers more social entertainment value than any other console on the market,” said Don Mattrick, senior vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft. “Record Black Friday sales in the U.S., coupled with our existing global install base of 25 million and an online community of more than 14 million Xbox LIVE members, have laid the groundwork for continued global sales momentum in 2009.”

Xbox 360 sales have also surged worldwide since the September price drop, outselling the PlayStation 3 week over week across Europe. Console sales in Europe are up as much as 400 percent, with sales nearly double year over year and reaching 7 million consoles sold this generation.

With a mass-market price point starting at $199.99 worldwide (estimated retail price) for Xbox 360 Arcade, a games lineup of more broad-appeal social titles than any other platform, and the recently launched New Xbox Experience, Xbox 360 is leading the industry and inviting everyone to play.

I still take a Wii though because there's nothing my PC can't do that the Xbox 360 can.

Ok ok, I know already, people were only there to get the Jasper consoles. I saw all the Jasper consoles fly off the shelves while Falcon 360s were left behind. People were there for quality, not quantity. I already saw my friend buy the new Jasper console yesterday at my local EB Games.

I'm sure it helped that the Xbox360 was probably the only console that had any good black friday deals.

By me, the PS3 had no deals going, the Wii came with a free Memory Card(big deal, they are just SD cards), and every purchase of an Xbox360 Arcade came with a free 20GB hard drive and extra controller.

Exactly -- I was planning on getting a 360 for GTA:4, but now that it's coming out for PC, I can spend my money elsewhere. Not to mention I'm quite sure the PC experience of the game -- with mods galore -- will be quite a bit more worth my money than the xbox version, just like Left 4 Dead is turning out to be for everyone.

Play it on xbox live, so worth it. Gears 2 is a lot better.

Tried it (briefly) -- got tired of the trash talk. Just like when I play CS or TF2 or something, the first thing I do is turn off voice chat.

And my PC can play them -- the just haven't been released for them yet.

It's like a cellphone plan for video gamers. Nobody plays XBOX360 for the titles or the hardware alone. It's all about XBL. XBL is keeping that console alive and even with fanboyism in favor of Microsoft's rivals aside I would still be weary about a 360.

Good for them though! The market needs companies to do well.

I'll agree with you there. Though I don't dig it, personally, XBL seems to be very well made and easy to use to meet up with people.

Well I wouldnt call much of what the 360 had going on on Black Friday as really deals. None of the prices were lowered on many electronic gaming systems. The DS had the mario bundle or 149 which came with a red Mariofied DS and a game. The PSP didnt offer much more than their standard for 200. 360 had the same price all across the board with the exception of the HDD for the Arcade.

what i just so is try to stay alive in FPS online for as long as possible because thats the key to having fun and possibly winning
