Windows Market-Share Falls Below 90% Mark, Hits 15 Year Low

In the month of November, the market share of Microsoft Windows fell below the 90% mark, to 89.6%. This is a 15 year low in market share for the OS, according to market share data by Net Applications, sourced by TG Daily. The market share fell from its position same time, last year, at 92.4%.

One of the prime movers of this figure is the growth in market share of Apple's Mac OS X at 8.87%, slightly over 2% growth from its market share last year. According to the same data, Linux is still below the 1% mark.

No surprise here. Masses aren't moving to Vista thus the lower then average market share. From the look of it, XP still holds a respectable 71% marketshare

Wow, what dominance. Just under 90% market share and that's a 15-year low, we need some competition. Mac is bringing it, if they can outlast the "hip" factor and release a product that could be considered mainstream (around $500 or so) they will really be in business. The internet won't allow for microsoft to follow the same formula of problematic releases it seems (i.e. vista).

That's interesting. I never realised Windows (still) had such a large market share (89.6%.). With netbooks, linux derivatives and MacOS I expected it to be a lower than this figure. Congrats MS! (Even if it is a little lower in % terms, it is still a phenominal performance).

I'd love to be able to credit Linux for this, but I know this is mostly Apple's doing.

Though Linux installations in the netbook market are probably helping out some.

Good to finally see that Windows is starting to be looked over and Linux is being found out!

Linux is getting simpler to use. When I first tried Linux, (a couple years ago), playing mp3/wma was challenging. Now its a different story. So I think it will be more % for Linux in future.

Microsoft got back into major advertising to finally counter the viral Apple ads. If things keep going the way they are with advertisements, I suspect Microsoft may recover some lost ground at the expense of Apple. I still don't expect Linux to move very much over the next year.

If so, I would like to see people buy Vista CDs just because of the panoramic image feature. I haven't seen any other commercieals except for that one.

Instead of Fixing their Current OS they Continue to try and Skew the Flaws with Features and Lame ass Commercials named "Mojave Experiment", and then replace the Heap with a New OS that no one knows will Rock or bomb in a year.

The "Mojave" commercials (countering all the bad Vista publicity) + the "all walks of life use Windows" ads are quite effective (directly countering Apple's PCs are for Excel ads) but it will take some time to show how effective. Those are really the only two fronts Apple is attacking successfully and Microsoft hasn't tried to counter it until a few months ago.

Time will tell if it works or not.

They have been dropping. They were 3 something a few months ago now they are struggling to get 2.00$.. There was a point last month where they were at 1.58$ iirc.

I've just played about with the beta of windows 7 and it runs on vista drivers and I had 3dmark06 running on it without a problem.

While I don't agree with the premise of the Mojave commercials (I don't like the idea of someone tricking users into thinking they're using another OS when they're not -- I can put a WinXP skin on a copy of Ubuntu and show people some wiz-bang effects, but it doesn't mean they think Linux is great)...

...I have admit that when I heard an elderly relative mention them about two months ago, before the TV commercials even started, I knew that the ad campaign was being effective.

Personally I love the Mojave experiment. It shows just how ignorant people can be. They'll listen to their neighbor's pimple faced nephew when he says "gawd Vista teh sux... I hate Vista" and allow themselves to be convinced by it. The Mojave experiment exploited a handful of these types and when the commercials came out then thousands of people with a similar mentality quietly thought to themselves about how ignorant they probably are with regards to Vista.

I've watched no fewer than 5 of my co-workers be as apprehensive and skeptical one would expect until they watched me use Vista on my laptop... slowly one by one they started to come around and accept that Vista is pretty cool. A couple of them were absolutely floored that I could play games on the laptop with Vista. They would have sworn that Vista had to be eating up all the computer's resources making playing games impossible.

Good to see, this is not going to be the fall of Microsoft, but maybe a turn in some of the ways they do things.

Agreed... when a company has to actually fight for it's market share it makes them respect their clients a lot more. Perhaps some day M$ will actually need us more than we need them.

Only when corporations and their board of directors can only make money based off customer approval and only when making profit.

*Funny doesn't sound like a bad idea*
