HD 4670 1GB and Crysis demo etc.

Hi,

I recieved a Spahire HD 4670 1GM DDR3 750MHz*873MHz stock and am running it in XFire with a Saphire HD 4670 512MB GDDR3 750MHz*1000MHz stock, and have the XFire setup at 778MHz*923MHz because the max GPU MHz is only 778MHz for the 512MB HD 4670 and the max memory MHz is only 923MHz for the 1GB HD 4670.

Running these at 778MHz*923MHz in XFire gave very playable framerates in the Crysis Demo of low to high 20's and very low 30's (average mid to high 20's it seemed using FRAPS), slightly but noticeably better than the two Saphire HD 4670's 512MB versions @ 765MHz*1100MHz or so running in XFire. This is odd, interseting etc.

This 1GB + 512MB setup (utilizing 512MB of RAM for each card in XFire) running at low MHz speeds scored only slightly less - 200 -330 less total 3DMark06 points, a few 10 - 20MHz less CPU points etc. - than the faster MHz speeds of the two Saphire HD 4670 versions running in XFire.

MaybeXfire is utilizing more than 512MB of RAM on the 1GB card, even though it is not supposed to????

Here are 3DMark06 scores in comparison to a stock and very OC'd QX9770 :

I paid very little for my system and much, much, much less than for either of the QX9770 systems. CHEAP, but OK. Once I get my Asrock mobo that has fiddleable voltage controls on it, I should be able to increase my 5400+ BE CPU from 3.2GHz to 3.4GHz or so, and maybe also increase the voltages and speeds just a tiny bit to my video cards. Maybe. Might have to get a new HSF but I doubt it.

Interesting, and the Asrock with the SB750 in comparison to my MSI K9A2 CF v.1.0 with its SB600 should also make a positive difference.

Cheaply now , Chris

most likely, the memory timings are faster on the card, giving it a boost despite the lower clocks.

FYI the 1GB of the HD4670 is worthless, even more so because your Cross-X with a 512mb verison. the 1GB Verizon. will not use 1GB of its available memory, it will only use 512mb.. example

HD3850 512mb, CF with a HD3850 256mb, the 512mb will only use 256mb of its ram.
HD3850 1GB, CF with a HD3850 256mb, the 1GB will only use 256mb of its ram.

So infact you might see a decrease in performance, since usually 1GB card have slower memory... and will not use all available ram, it will clock to the lower card's memory/speeds

That's what I clearly said in my posts, that is that the 1GB HD 4670 is only running with 512MB RAM when XFired with a HD 4670 with 512MB of RAM, and I clearly stated that!!!

I have seen an increase in FPS but a slight decrease in 3DMark06 Benchmarks, and that is the mystery!!!!

3GB RAM, then 1.5gb video RAM won't be fully utilized in Vista will it? Try this again on 64 bit and see how it fares

Thanx!!! Makes sense and I was stumped. Maybe GPU-Z will show me the timings, I don't know, can't remember even though I ran GPU-Z lasrt night. Too tired to think I think. That seems to be happening more frequently due to age and brain numbness from brain numbing events that occurred in the past. Me thinks this may be be part of the origin of the phrase 'numb nuts', not sure though as I forgot.

Thanx again and I also gave you a forum thanx, Chris

PS: May get a second 1GB HD 4670 since the first one is working good, but not necessary. Must also test the 1GB and 512MB cards each seperately tonight.

I know that and stated that in my post I do believe.

Chris

PS: I also am on 32-bit WinXP-Pro so no 64-bit OS tests for me, but I think Mussels hit the nail on the head with the memory timing pssibly being higher/tighter on the 1GB card even though it is running at a lower MHz speed.

QX9650 is not very common imo, its still in the $1000 range.

I clearly recall having more FPS in Crysis running two 4870's as opposed to one.

How did you manage that? All the Crysis benchmarks I have seen show maybe 1-2fps increase. Or does Warhead add crossfire support?

Warhead benefits from XFire, but the original Crysis doesn't as far as all the many tests/reviews i have read about the subject.

Yes, but I onlly have 32-bit XP Pro, so I can't try 64-bit, but plan on getting Vista Ultimate in 32 and 64-bit verison package in the near future.

I tried the 1GB DDR3 4670 alone and unXFired, and it did better than the 512MB GDDR3 4670 with faster RAM MHz version. The 1GB version hit up to 43FPS or so and maybe a min. of 20 or 21FPS or so, while the 512 MB 4670 with faster MHz GDDR3 RAM version hit a max of 38 FPS or so and a min of 16FPS or so. So, I think Mussels hit the nail on the head and that is that the tighter etc. timings of the lower MHz speed RAM on the 1GB 4670 version is performing better than the faster MHz 512MB RAM of the 512MB 4670 version. Interesting. Probably the extra amount of RAM is also helping the 1GB 4670 version.

When running these two differetn 4670 versions together in XFire, when I switch to or from XFire mode in CCC the compooter has to be rebooted to calibrate the different cards with different memory sizes, so I think I will get another 1GB 4670 version and sell my two 512MB 4670 versions.
