Does a gamers of really need over 750 W even with overclocking

Would you really need or use over 750W for powering your gaming rig, even with your CPU OCd to 3.6+ and you V 1.4+, huge OC on your graphics cars, and a blu-ray drive and two combo cd/dvd drives, 6 cathodes, a whole bunch of fans, have it charging 3 iPods.

Would you still even come close to 750W

I'm fine with 500w and my rig. I would say 750w is the sweet spot tho. 750w should handle a HD 4870X2 and a quad core.

If your talking about a quality PSU, then no, you wont need to get anything near 750W. A Corsair 750W should power a quad and two 4870X2's, which is much more powerful than the average gaming rig.

I have a 500W stealthxstreme and it does fine with my 3200+, but with a quadcore running huge OC and same with your videocard, where would the safespot be?

It is hard to say when you did not list the video card.
Lets say you meant a 4870x2.
The rig would probably only idle at about 300W or so. At load it would be about 400 maybe 450W roughly.

Its not just a simple case of whether the total potential watt draw from the individual components adds to a total less then the power supply can offer.

There are things to consider like how stable the power is, how efficient, and most importantly the way its delivered. What i mean by delivery is that a standard power supply forward power thru to a single point on a CPU causing greater heat, less overclocking capability etc etc, whereas the newer power supplied (generally 850w+) PSU's have 8Phase power to the CPU or even more. The spread of power to the CPU allows a more controlled temperature, more stability and im sure you know the rest.

Its vital that the PSU exceeds the computers potential limits, not just in watts, but in amps, amount of rails, correct phase and efficiency. I dont think theres a point of too much power as long as the efficiency is appropriate.

my rig is running off a PCP&C 510w turbocool no issues ever and i have had quads multiple VGA cards on it etc.

a 750W could handle 2x4870x2 and a dual core or a 4870x2 a 4870 and a quad
