Protecting the computer (windows defender, avast, etc)?

Hi Everyone!

Well I have been attempting to get my laptop back up to speed. The HDD and MOBO have been replaced already and I am gradually getting it back to where I want it. I have wiped the HDD, reinstalled Windows XP and all related patches/updates, and am starting from scratch.

I have ditched Norton Antivirus and have been using AVAST as my antivirus (based upon recommendations here...I really like it!). For my Browser I have been using Opera again for the past couple of days and like it. I may try Firefox soon.

I am running Windows Defender and have no issues with it either.

My question is this: Should I also be using Spybot Search and Destroy and Adaware? This would be in addition to Windows Defender. What are your thoughts????

I have used them in the past and have them up on my other desktop that the family uses for internet use (simply going to websites)...it is just a basic web surfer computer.

Thanks a bunch! Appreciate all the advice!

Nothing wrong with using multiple spyware apps, usually is a good idea. I use defender, adaware, s&d ect all one after another.

Agreed with Firefox w/ Adblock Plus and NoScript. I suggest Antivir. Very trustworthy Antivirus and is less resource hogging the avast. Takes up about 40mb with guard enabled and 30mb with guard disabled.

Also a +1 on firefox with adblock plus. And you can still type things in the address bar and it uses google, just more refined of a browser and way more plugins ect than chrome.
