ORDERED--HAVE QUESTIONS--GPU Recommendation PLEASE
I'm not wanting to buy a top end card, just something to "balance" out my system. I think if I had a decent card I would be very satisfied with FSX performance. This system actually seems to do ok compared to other's results that I've read about. I'm not quite sure about compatibility and I don't want to pay for something that will just be held back by the rest of the system. Thanks in advance, everyone, for your abundant knowledge and help.
There's too many choices out there. So, a couple of questions to start with. Can you guys please check out these cards? And, my board supports PCI Express 1.0. What happens when I put a PCI Express 2.0 card in? Does the 8800gt outperform the 9800gt and, if it does, why? Are there any builders I should stay away from (PNY, KFA2, MSI, etc.)? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814133205 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...161&CatId=1558 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...544&CatId=3669 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127387 Last edited by sprayall; Jan 1, 2009 at 02:52 AM. |

Lol never heard of KFA2
![]() But the 4670 I heard and saw does a pretty darn good job. I'd take that one, or the 8800.

My friends system I built for him is almost like yours but you have 1Gb more than he does. I've seen him play FSX without issues using a HD3870. I'm not sure how the 4670 would handle FSX with it's 128-bit ring bus but the 8800GT/9800GT is a little better than a 3870 so it should have no problems playing FSX with some details. My other recommendation would be to go for a HD4850 since the price on them is pretty reasonable and kind of give you that future proof for awhile.

Performance vise
4670=9600GSO 384 < 9600GT <8800GT<=(depending of the clocs and 9800GT should use 55nm G92) 9800GT And for brand go for MSI. So if I was you with no doubt in my mind I would get MSI 9800GT this seccond.

grab a 4830, or go with the 9800GT. There should be some 4850s on sale here for pretty cheap.

Yeah...if you can get a 4830 for under $100 after rebate, that's definitely the best bang for the buck. A 4830 is pretty much even with the 9800GT.

If you like the 9800GT....it's to bad this card version is no longer available.....
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121266 And this one was even better with 128 stream processors.... http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum...e-palit-7.html But you can't go with any of the ATi 4000 series that have been mentioned. *+

4830 all day long. Nvidia suggestion 8800 GT for budget, 9800 equals the 4830.
Edit, you can put a PCI-E 2.0 card in a 1.0 slot with no problems. That's called backwards compatible.

Hey I'll put this in lamens terms
Get ati 4830, its basically a detuned 4850, you can't go wrong for 100 bucks... if your broke 4670, no other options, nvidia side its the 9800GT which gets beat my 4830 if Oc'd, then 9800GTX and GTX+ but the money is kinda out there. |

Ordered the 4830-Thanks Guys
Thanks newtekie1 and spearman914 for the good find on the 4830!!!!-killer deal. Also bought the 750W PSU
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817341011 I was wondering about the backwards compatibility (the card being PCI-E 2.0) I'm not losing any performance because the slot is 1.0 am I? Also, any tips for installing card and PS? Anything I should read up on while it's being shipped? I will be asking about oc'ing after I get it installed and running normally. Thanks again for all the suggestions. I would have been completely lost without them-too many cards to choose from. Last edited by sprayall; Jan 1, 2009 at 03:05 AM. |

Read about how to overclock your card. Google 4830 overclock and maybe get familiar with your company as well. Registering your new card will be important so check that out. Its a great card so enjoy it, benchmark it, and game with it!

How did you figure that ?....A pretty silly comment if you took the time and looked at my system specs, then realized I was responding to the OP'ers question about giving a recommendation on several graphics cards he had selected. One of which was a 9800GT, which reminded me of that special card and the review of it. That card has since been discontinued, but I still thought it was worth mentioning in addition to recommending the 4000 series cards, many of which had already been listed in previous posts and didn't feel the need to repeat over again.......
