Kinda new to photoshop and im wondering how people how people do stuff like this?

System Specs

well in general what I do for that kind of thing is employ a pencil or brush in a high value (white, grey or hue for colored smoke) on a dark background
and rather than work on a separate layer, work on a copy of the background with the smoke sketch

then selecting a really big brush employ the blur tool, and the smudge tool
its massive compute cycles, alot of data ends up being crunched
some trial and error is obviously involved

you maywell screw up the background if it isn't uniform
but afterwords you can erase large portions of it leaving just the smoke areas and layer it above the original background

this also works well for fake burled walnut, mottled backgrounds ect.
