Getting vista soon.
well as the title says i'm finally making the jump from xp to vista. is there any way i can install vista over xp without wiping out my HDD? i have way to much stuff on here to burn to CD's and dont have an external drive. any help would be appreciated and if any other info is needed just ask.

I think you should be able to upgrade, not 100% sure as every time I've installed its been fresh. But I imagine Microsoft would have at least made sure that was possible.

Not really. You will pretty much have to transfer everything over to Dvd's,CD's or even a external drive.

yeh when i installed vista i pretty much had to reinstall all my games etc
but if i can remember rightly i think vista gave me the choice to keep all my old files music,pics,everything really.and puts them all in a folder called 'windows old' i think. ages ago i did that mind Last edited by stuartb04; Jan 4, 2009 at 08:50 PM. Reason: missing text |

buy a external harddrive then put you stuff on it when your done wipe it clean and take it back ...

I would make a partition with http://gparted.sourceforge.net/ and backup what you want on the partition. Make sure to make it FAT32 for your backups! Thats what I did! Example:

as long as you don't format when you install vista over a windows hdd you have a windows.old folder that contains EVERYTHING that was on the hdd with the previous os.

Backing up DATA, Formatting, Reinstall of OS is the best choice in my opinion. i always end up with problems when i upgraded.

Well to install 2 os at a same partition u need to dual boot.
