Friend has a boot problem

when his computer powers up and trys to boot it says NTLDR is missing

he has no OS on HDD, its been freshly formatted.

When booting from a disk can get to the first bit but then freezes.

Any ideas?

what os vista or xp and when hes gets the NTLDR missing is that when hes tring to install windows

Its when we try to do anything, how ever we tried to install Seven and XP.

There is no OS at all at the moment.
