Best laptop around $1000 15.4" and under

Going to university next year so I'm looking for some input on purchasing a laptop.
Will be doing basic tasks (internet, word processing, etc) as well as some gaming (CoD4/5, HL2, FarCry 2, etc). I don't need to be running these games at max settings, but mid-range for CoD4 would be nice. The laptop should have a discrete graphics card and have an intel Core 2 duo processor (t5800 and up plz) and be 15.4' or less, for ease of mobility. Take battery life into account also. Are any brands preferred? dell, hp, toshiba, etc? Thx in advance.

That first one for $999 You are from Canada right? Just making sure :P It's got mostly 5 star reviews, although I'm not 100% sure about the graphics.

HP is EXCELLENT if you plan on running Vista or 7, however are horrendously incompatible with XP hardware wise.
If you want XP, try Dell and Acer.

Gateway makes incredible PC laptops all around.

The only crap about Dell is battery life. Even playing something like maplestory (don't really play it) , u'll only get 45min batery life w/ power saver plan on. WTF?

Dell is ok, they've gotten their crap together.

Toshiba are great but I've seen 2 or 3 that have had bad displays.

I've got a Dell Inspiron 1520 w/ C2D and a 8600mGT and w/ the 9 cell battery I get 5-6 hours of battery life. I have been pretty pleased with it so far but if I were to get another laptop anytime soon I would get an ASUS. 3 of my friends have them and all of them are very nice quality. Newegg usually has pretty good deals on them.

I have a Toshiba and it rocks. Graphics-wise, not the best for gaming but it can run CSS on medium with some details. Just be careful of the ones with the clossy chassis, they are fingerprint and smudge magnets! But its a great all around laptop and I got a great deal on it last year around christmas

glossy is a turnoff, i like a matte finish. Best part about that asus is the compact size.

only thing about that asus is make sure you get it as soon as you can i talked to our inventory guy about them and he said that Asus cannot keep up with demand on them. On the other hand my BBY got 13 of them in stock for next week
