Intel to Release Three New Quad Core LGA775 CPUs with a 65W TDP

The guys over at Hexus.net, have got hold of information that shows details of three new quad core processors with a thermal design power (TDP) of only 65W. The interesting thing is that it seems Intel have still not yet given up the LGA775 socket despite it being superceded. These are the lowest TDP quad cores from Intel to date, based on a 45nm manufacturing process, and in theory using up to 30W less power than current quad core processors, it shows a step in the right direction. Unfortunately it cannot be all good news, as it seems that the expected prices for these are approximatly $100 more than the similarly clocked 95W counterparts.

Makes sense, they are waiting on pushing DDR3 to mainstream, so to release more efficient LGA775 CPU's would be the best way to keep cash flow coming in.

Cuz it has a lower TDP which most likely means it oc's better.

Instead of selling you i5 chips they sell you newer revision/stepping of their existing chips, the Q9550 looks very attractive if only it was sold sub Ł200 instead!

I'll keep my money until at least 2010 for i7 or something better than replace my quad with any of these ripoff chips.

Its a new tech some people will want latest best stuff. It will sell better than 95W variants. Imagine the marketing hype to non-tech people, 65W low power consuming, energy effecient quad core! etc, etc.
Or if they go into a shop with not much knowledge and see a 95W or 65W, in this "economin climate" (conversation for another time, lol), they may go for the more "energy effecient" one.
That and like previously said, even to us tech people, we like new things, and better OCabaility!

I bet if it had been more of a public thing, MS could have got away with charging more for the jasper revision console.

The Q9550 would be tempting if it were <Ł200 and could reach 4GHz on air... or am I expecting too much?

It should improve the chances, I've seen 95w Q9xxx reach 4GHz on air before, by the guys over at XS of course.

What they are asking for the 65w Q9550 works out at around Ł260, you could buy an i7 chip for that money!

Maybe on something like the True with a Delta fan strapped to either side. j/k

No seriously, it would probably be doable, but I'm not so sure on temps.

Possible. The current Q9550 can do 4GHz with good cooling or 3.5 GHz w/ stock. That new stepping should get at least 4.2-4.5GHz.

Yes, but a lower TDP...

I don't know about getting better clocks but it does make a little sense, especially when you consider Intel is trying to be super green these days.

That's absolutely incredible!

It's like the G0 stepping for Kentsfield a year and a half ago. These should overclock to 4.5Ghz on air, and I'm waiting to see people trying.

think i might wait for a while maybe get a q9550/9650 over my q6600 which clocks ok but want more .
would go for a i7 but as spearman914 said cost of mobo, ram and the cpu itself plus getting a new water block/ good air cooler for my cpu just isnt worth it at this moment in time
