Urgent Partition Help

Hi,

I installed Kubuntu 8.10 on my hard drive afew weeks ago, it was on an 80GB Partition. But i never used it and hated how when i booted my PC this showed:

Code:
Kubuntu 8.10
Kubuntu 8.10 (something...)
Kubuntu 8.10 (something...)
Loader
Vista Home
If i didn't move down and select Vista, it would boot to Kubuntu. So yesterday i used the Vista Drive Manager to delete what was on that partition. Everything seemed fine, but after a restart it got the to boot screen and now shows:

Code:
GRUB Loading stage 1.5.

GRUB Loading, please wait...
Error 17
_
It just stays on this screen.

Please help, i really don't want to loose everything on that drive.

Thanks

Maybe you have to make a repair install of vista.. it will correct to boot sector.. but lets see what the others suggest before you try first

Ok, I've done exactly what you've done before.

What happened is that when you uninstalled (deleted) Kubuntu, you also deleted GRUB, the boot loader. GRUB replaced the Windows boot loader, and now GRUB isn't there anymore so that's why you're getting an error.

What you have to do is to reinstall Kubuntu. That will reinstall GRUB and let you access Your Vista partition. Unfortunately, I don't know how to uninstall GRUB, but at least you can access your Vista partition. But I'm sure there's info about how to revert back to the default Windows boot loader somewhere on the internet.

And you can change the default choice with a program like SUM. You can also edit the number of choices, the order of the items, and the timeout.

Hope this helps.

You have deleted the boot partition containing the info on OS you have and paths. I don`t know how to or there is a way to fix that. You could try to repair Ubuntu and hope that all will get like it was.

Linky

I can't guarantee it but it sounds like it would work.

Edit: Looks like this is only for XP, not Vista. (whoops)

Boot from your vista disk and open the recovery command prompt. Then run bootrec.exe and then type fixmbr.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392

the windows bootloader will then have replaced grub
