What's better? GTX260 216 or HD4870?
Which card is better & why?

seems like I remember a thread about this topic from somewhere...
260 216 OCs better than the 4870 so you might get better performance post-OC (assuming no v-mods..etc). Also supports physx. 4870 supports dx10.1 which (I think) means it will have dx11 support in windows 7, and supports HDMI output for HTPCs as well as a few other features. correct me if I am wrong. this is the closest thread I could find to the topic, but I think there is one on the TPU forums as well.. http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=215396

Depends on the game, resolution, and benchmarking program. Sometimes the 260 will have the advantage and others the 4870 will.

The 260 seems to be slightly better in most benches, but at very high resolutions with AA turned on, the 4870 wins. The 260 overclocks good as well.

At this point, get whichever is cheaper. They are both very good cards. Each has minor advantages over the other, but nothing that I would be worried about. You should be happy with either.

I'd say 260 but then again that would be kinda biased
I picked it over the 4870 1gb because it came with a free game and was by EVGA the only manufacturer I trust. Pick whatever is cheaper tbh.

I'd go with the 4870 as it has good sound through hdmi without any internal cabling plus you never know if there will be dx10.1 support in future games, although physx support of the nvidia card could be a nice feature, i guess it depends if you are interested in physx support or not.

both are good cards. I would get whichever is cheaper. I have a 4870 and love it, and people say the same about the 260... can't go wrong with either

As said, it kind of depends( also depends on company preference for some), but the GTX 260 should pull ahead in most games and what not, but then again the GDDR5 should do some damage in some other games(expecally if its the 1GB version), Plus the 4870 is cheaper overall. But then again you could go with a SSC or FTW version(more expensive) of the GTX's and that has proven it self over the 4870 in most situations.
This should explain most of it.

GTX260 216 OC > 4870 1 gb > 4870 512mb For $20 more i would go with GTX260.

Having owned both, albeit the Palit 1GB HD4870 Sonic only briefly the 260 is the better card IMO, even in the few games where the 4870 gets a couple of FPS higher, the 260 still feels smoother and more accomplished for some reason but in the UK, the 260 is mostly around £40 more than a 1GB 4870 with that amount of difference I would probably take the 4870.

Spot on, these 2 cards just scale beautifully and overclock amazingly to the value of almost 24000 3D mark 2006 points but more importantly in games they run so much cooler than the 260 did. basically when I got them, it was GTX280 beating performance for a little over the price of a decent 260 but I did get a good deal.
