System Specs

Used 8800GT for 80$

Hello guys.

I've been trying to save money to buy the GTX280/285... but it's been real hard when you have bills to pay, car insurance, the whole lot. And the state of the global economy doesn't really allow money to be wasted on "superficial" things like computer hardware. It's the truth, people.

When I bought my system 3 months ago, I skimped on the GPU as I thought I would later get a better one, and the budget then only allowed me to come home with a cheap card.

So here are the basics of my specs:

Asus P5Q Pro

Intel E8400 + Thermalright IFX-14 cooler

XFX 8600gt 512MB DDR2.

The model i'm considering buying is the ASUS 8800GT 512 DDR3 GLACIATOR.

Considering this, and knowing I could get it for 80$ (with original box, cables, bundle, etc), is this a good purchase? I know the 8600gt is just plain old and slow, especially my DDR2 version... I know the 8800GT is a great improvement over the 8600gt, but still, is it a capable card for today's games? I never go beyond 1280*1024... I'm just comfortable @ that resolution.

What do you guys think?

The 8800 is a HD GFX and capable of resolution like 1920x1080.. i play Fallout 3 and CoD WaW as well as WoW at this resolution on high setting and it doesnt stutter.. so go for it

its still a powerful card and worth the 80 bucks. If your wondering about what kind of clocks check out my sig for a link to the 8800 Over clock thread.

I just recently retired my 8800GT for a GTX 280. and i'll say the driver issues have had me going up a wall the last week. I finally have some sort of stability but i think that the drivers that were made back in the 8800 days were a lot better. I would recommend the 8800GT. I love my 8800GT so much that the next rig i build will have that 8800GT in it, so all in all its more like in cold storage then retirement.

I have the ASUS 8800GS with the Glaciator HS. The fan on the card is silent but overall the heatsink isn't as good as a decent aftermarket cooler. I lapped it and my load temps are about 60C when running folding@home for days straight (705/1728/1900 core/shader/mem). Only issue I have is I couldn't change any of the voltages using nibitor and nvflash without having the card blue screen in 3D mode. A flash back to the original BIOS and everything was fine. On my BFG and PNY 8800GT's I had no problem flashing the BIOS to 1.1V in 3D mode.

the GS's didn't have the same quality coolers that their fill blooded GT brothers had. I eventually bought a 8800GT AKIMBO cooler for mine, and i lapped that and it went well droped temps alot.

most of the gs's have the rev 2 coolers used on the 8800GT's but I used to use the HR-03 on my old GT, I wonder if a better cooler is out now
