mATX Crossfire Rig PSU Choice

If you don't already know, I'm planning a mATX build that will consist of the following:

Antec Mini P180 mATX Case
E8400 / E8500 / E5200
DFI LANPARTY JR P45-T2RS CROSSFIRE
ATi HD 4850 (for now)
WD3200AAKS
2x1GB D9GMH (for now)

This is the PSU I had in mind:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817341018

I wanted to know if anybody has had any bad experiences with the MODxSTREAM PRO series of OCZ PSU's, or if you had another alternative (hopefully as cheap or cheaper) for me.

Dunno what ocz uses now for an oem, but they used to use an fsp design which wasn't the greatest. Did a lot of research on johhnyguru on power supplies when I was in the market a while back, which led me to select my zalman 750W. (Helped it was heavily discounted at the time ). It's around what you're looking for, and I've never had a problem with it

I use the a ModXStream-Pro...its very stable and I have had no issues with it at all; as per OCZ/PCP&C standards....it even came with a rebate! (Check SysSpecs for more details)

Nice and cheap and it does the job well....modular is always good for tidy cases.

Well, dunno. After seeing how those ModXStreams fared in [H]ardOCPs test, I became a bit wary. (Both samples they had died). It's not FSP this time around either, they've gone with Sirtec as OEM.

So if not this PSU, which ones can you guys find that are modular, don't have blue LED fans, are 600W or higher, and cost under $100?

CLICK! - $79.99 after MIR Check this out, you may be interested.

p.s still don't think the OCZ unit is a bad one and [H] to say the least is usually full of shit, but I think the above PSU will suit your needs well and its better value!

I almost got a Strider a while back, but went with a Decathlon for the single +12V rail. I like Silverstone PSU's, but it seems like the OCZ might be a better value. it is a little bit cheaper after rebate, but then again, sleeving the Strider's cables would be much easier, and I could do so without voiding the warranty.

This will be a tough decision. Thanks aCid.

EDIT: Just realized, I've got to pay $10.25 shipping for the Silverstone, versus free shipping on the OCZ.

OCZ AR delivered: $78
Silverstone AR delivered: $97

I think I'd rather nab the OCZ for that

Any other suggestions? I am planning on ordering today!!!

Another one I'm looking at is the Enermax Modu82+ 625W, specifically for the reason that it has four 6+2 PCI-E connectors, and is the only modular PSU from a brand I trust that has more than one 8-pin. That, and I owned an Enermax Liberty 620W, and I think it would look sweet with individually sleeved cables.

I actually just made an offer on one on ebay for $10 under Newegg's AR Shipped price. We'll see how it goes, since it's $21 lower than his BIN price...

I ultimately want to buy an Enermax Revolution or a high-end Silverstone Decathlon or an Antec Signature, but I need a good deal for the next few months that will resell well.

I disagree I had that same thought pattern, but you can run a quadfire or trifire setup on a 850w PSU, depends on the rails for the PSU, thats why if your going for a crossfire at matx level need to make the rails are giving you a lot of amps.

I won't be needing the horsepower for dual 4870x2's just yet.

Here are the choices for a PSU to use for the next few months (which will power under 500W worth of equipment...trust me, I've calculated it).

Prices are total cost shipped and taxed that I can get from various places, and all links lead to Newegg for research reasons.

Enermax Modu82+ 625W - $105

OCZ MODxSTREAM PRO 700W - $113 w/ $35 MIR ($78 AR)

Silverstone Strider 600W - $123 w/ $25 MIR ($98 AR)

My gaming rig with that Windsor and 4850 idles @170w and full load both cpu and gpu and all HDDs spinning it only takes up 280/290w. Add one more 4850 I am looking @ 360w or 375w max. So any PSU that can output that watts continuosly for endless hours will be good (ofcourse top brand ones).

My Quad 9850BE power sucker uses only about 330W when in full load.

So any of the above is a good choice.

My vote is Enermax - decided to buy a car why not Rolls Royce?

After fully reading pancho's psu guide, i'll never go back to modular again. Modular psu's die quickly and cables even melt a little over time!!!! I'll get a quote of where i find it.

Quote:
Modular Cabling: Modular cabling is always something that PC enthusists want. with modular cabling, most cables other then the 20+4 pin, 4 pin cpu, etc. come seperate from the PSU. with modular cabling, you only need to use the cables which you want. the rest of the cables can stay outside of the case, which will help improve your airflow. While modular cabling does improve airflow, they limit power by increasing the electrical resisitance, in fact the voltage drop can be as much as that which would occur in 2 feet of standard wire. Worst of all though, modular plugs utilize delicate pins that can easily loosen, corrode, and burn, creating the potential for a major system failure.

How long have you had your PSU?? I've had mine for a little over 10 months???

and had no issues with it. Though I think it may be the issue for OC but not a hundred percent sure as I may switch to an 850w

My silencer psu is not modular tho, kicking for 4months. don't know when it's gonna die. But before it dies, i'll be looking into a new one (next year )

I'm looking for short term remember. And since I'm stuffing a crossfire rig into a mATX case (and soon watercooling as well) I think modular is necessary (for now at least).

Pick from one of the three, or recommend another modular! We've got one vote for the Enermax so far.
