Intel Phasing Out 7 CPUs by Q3, Features Popular Models

Silicon giant Intel, has reportedly decided to lay to rest, seven of its popular CPUs, under the Core 2 Extreme and Core 2 Quad series, by Q3 2009. The process of phasing these models out takes place in two stages: issuing product discontinuation notices (PDNs) to channel vendors and other key distributors, and to declare the product end of life (EOL) shortly after. Likely to face the axe are Core 2 Extreme models QX9770 and QX9650; Core 2 Quad models Q9450, Q6700 and Q6600.

As of now, Core 2 Quad Q9450 has already been phased out, while the older Q6700 is awaiting EOL declaration within this month. For Core 2 Quad Q6600, one of Intel's most popular offerings, and perhaps the most successful quad-core desktop processor SKU at the markets, PDNs will be issued in February, and it will reach EOL sometime in Q2 2009. Meanwhile, for the Yorkfield-based Core 2 Extreme models, PDNs will be issued in February, and they will be reach EOL in Q2. In related news, Core 2 Duo E7200 and Pentium E2200 will be phased out by Q3 this year, with no word on the specifics of their PDNs.

"Phase out" This means that they are not going to make the Q9450 anymore ?

Because my English is not that good

Phase out means to sell what’s left with the model. So let’s say Intel has 20 Q9450’s left, when they sell all 20, there will be no more Q9450’s.

Shame about Q6600. Last of the great 1066 FSB. Big shame.

Hopefully this means price drops for the remaining models. I'd like to see the Q9650 under $300, I'm finding it hard to hold out on buying one as it is.

This also means there won't be anymore Core 2 Extreme processors for 775.

I thought the Q6700 was already finished with?

Good riddance to the over-priced Xtreme processors, i could never justify spending well over £500 on one of them, let alone £1000!!

Yea, Xtreme procs are overpriced A LOT!!! What's the difference, just an unlocked multi. AMD made BE's but at a reasonable price.

And clocked 200MHz more

Seriously. That's why I bought my Q9550 instead of the QX9650 'cause it was like £300 more? For 200MHz more?

Increase. Intel is eliminating intra-brand competition. People still think Q6600 is a great buy, and they needn't opt for the i7 and its higher platform costs. Why they got rid of Q9450 beats me, they could have put it under $250 and made it compete with Phenom II. Core 2 Extreme had to go, since cheaper Core i7s already made them bad buys.

Meaning it would keep the i7 procs the same price. They wouldn't dare raise prices. I also think it's a bit short sighted. They don't want to make any more. Overstock is a huge problem right now.

AMD's Black Edition processor should not be compared to the Xtreme Editions, or even the FX series. AMD knew their processors were falling behind, and purposely switched from the FX naming scheme for their top end processors to the BE naming scheme because they didn't want to dirty the FX name. Phenem II will see new FX named processors, with new $1000+ price tages again.

And not all BE processors were unlocked.

It makes sense that they are killing of the Core 2 Extreme. It is the only part of the 775 market that they have relaced. Core i7 is meant to replace the extreme high end market, which is why it is priced the way it is. It isn't overpriced by any means, you can get a Core i7 platform(CPU+Motherboard+RAM) for under $600. Core i5 is the mainstream platform.
