Windows 95 Disc Won't Boot

Hi all,

I'm trying to install Windows 95 on to an old computer. The computer had Windows 2000 Professional on it already, but that's been removed and Ubuntu is now on there.

Before installing Ubuntu, I tried to boot from the Windows 95 disc but nothing happend. I thought maybe it was because it didn't want to change to an older version, so installed Ubuntu but still no luck. And by the way, yes, it is set to boot from the CD Drive first in the BIOS!

The disc is fine, I'm sure. I've put the 95 disc in to my PC (See system specs and sig) just to check the disc works, and it's fine. No scratches or anything.

Is the old PC too new for Windows 95?!

All I know is it has a Pentium II CPU @ 400mhz

Thanks!!

First of all, I wouldn't bother with Windows 95. Second, I don't recall that CD being bootable in the first place.

Only reason I want to install it is to play an old game I've got. (Tried in DOSBox etc etc .... no real luck.)

How would you go about installing it normally if it isn't bootable? - This is obviously what I missed! Thanks Dan

Boot the machine with a Win95/98/Me boot floppy, make sure the boot media has the appropriate VxD driver for the CD-ROM drive, for example: oakcdrom.sys, etc., and is able to detect the CD. Once you're able to access the Win95 CD from command prompt, simply run setup.exe (either found in the CD root or "win95" directory).

from what i can remember i think windos 95 and ME needed a boot floppy to load the "boot files" then it installed off the disk.

You can get oakcdrom.sys from here

Add this to the config.sys in the floppy:

DEVICE=OAKCDROM.SYS /D:mscd001

..and this to the autoexec.bat file:

MSCDEX.EXE /D:mscd001

No luck so far, just says,

'Invalid system disk
Replace the disk, and then press any key'

Will try the bits you've said btarunr in a moment

You have to create a DOS bootable floppy. I used to get DOS 3.22 . Search it over internet and you will boot from floppy. after you format the disk with Format C: . After use MemMaker C: if you need. Then after your hard drive is ready to install Win95

The CD drive is spinning up, but I can't get to it. So I'm guessing I need a different driver for the CD drive. Any ideas?

I think my problem at the moment is simply not having the correct CD Drive drivers. Not sure though.

you shouldnt have to have certain cd drivers....the computer should automatically recognize the cd, try popping in a older cd drive

Its using ntfs which 95 cannot read it probably thinks that their isnt even a hard drive. you may need to boot up like deriks boot and nuke or maybe a faster program like a bootable linux distro and format the drive so it has no filesystem. or make it fat32. then tr booting 95

You said you had Ubuntu on it?
Have you set up a second partition to install Windows 95 on to? I'd recommend a FAT16 or FAT32 partition (FAT16 might be more compatibe IIRC) for w95, the disk might need to detect a working partition. (Solaris, you beat me to it! )
Also, I wouldn't bother with 95 in the first place, 98SE has much more functionality, and will run fine on a PII-400. I had 98SE running on a PII-450 Celeron, that ran really fast.

I had 98SE running on a PII-450 Celeron, that ran really fast.
my bad forgot about unbunut.....ya im sure that still qualifies as cant be read...try booting from your ubuntu disk in live mode and formatting the drive for fat16.
