Arctic Cooling Announces the Accelero Xtreme 4870X2
The Swiss low noise cooling solution provider Arctic Cooling today announced the launch of the Accelero XTREME 4870X2. Especially designed for the ATI Radeon HD4870X2, the Accelero XTREME 4870X2 follows the sophisticated design of the Accelero XTREME series, offering the best cooling solution for this high-end VGA card.
![]() Extreme cooling performance Outstanding cooling comes from outstanding components. The Accelero XTREME 4870X2 is equipped with three 92mm PWM fans running from 1,000 to 2,000 RPM, generating 81 CFM airflow which allows the fans to remove the heat from the two GPUs efficiently. The eight-heatpipe design also improves heat dissipation and achieves 320 Watts cooling capacity. The result is significant – the GPU temperature is 50°C lower than with the stock cooler. This enhances not only the overclock performance, but also extends the service life of your valuable graphics card. Quiet cooling guaranteed By using the low noise impeller and patented fan holder, the three 92mm PWM fans are incredibly quiet. Also thanks to the PWM function, the fans run just at necessary speed while offering sufficient cooling at the lowest noise level. Even running at full speed 2,000 RPM, the Accelero XTREME 4870X2 operates almost in silent with only 0.5 Sone of sound, creating a much quieter gaming environment beyond anyone’s imagination. The Accelero XTREME 4870X2 comes with a 6-year limited warranty. This product will be available by end of March 2009. The MSRP is US$68.30 and 53.95€ (excluding VAT). ![]() Source: Arctic Cooling |

AC provides two pretty beefy VRM heatsinks with this cooler, which is a good move. While it should provide much more efficient cooling than the stock cooler, along with being quieter, I'd be apprehensive as to unloading all that heat into my case. But with the right amount of exhausting case fans, it should be a great step up from the stock HD4870X2 cooler...

Is this the first 3rd party air cooler for the 4870x2?
It's taken long enough. If it's quiet enough I might just get one. |

Yeah, when you're spending £300+ on a graphics card ... what's another £50 to make it quiet?

It looks similar to what the Asus card has except the fans look quite a bit larger.

IMO, this will outperform the Asus cooler. To be the Asus cooler is just a great big HS stuck across the two GPU's with some big ass fans blowing at it.
This AC cooler uses heatpipes, with a bigger HS area. And lifts the HS off the GPU area.

Arctic Cooling is quickly coming my favorite company. The early days Silencer series were something new and then they came out with a whole range of them for every card out there. Not yet perfect designs (dust blocking heatsinks and killing bearings), but with Accelero series they hit the jackpot.
Accelero X1 and X2 didn't get the best response with people used to seeing heat-out-of-back designs of them earlier, but the price/performance of them was still great. Quote:
![]() 2½ slots if it's anything like the ones before. Either way under 3 slots, so that it's crossfire (or sli) compatible. Quote:
edit: that brings in mind my only complaint for the company. NONE of the products feature what the package contains. If you don't have a review or customer pictures you don't know how many and what heatsinks you get. edit2: just when I complained they've added a picture of the heatsinks coming with Accelero XTREME GTX 280: http://www.arctic-cooling.com/catalo...gtx280_08h.png

The difficulty comes in getting the old one off. I've got a stuck screw on mine so I'm gonna need the guys of TPU to get creative and help me get it off when my Accelero comes through next month.

I have the one for the 2900XT and there sweet. Cost of this one is a bit more but they do work well.
I'd buy one for sure if i had a 4870x2. Only thing i don't like is vreg's on mine get hotter than any other part of the card. However with this one i do not like all that metal around the gpu area as it would stop air reaching other parts of the card but that might touch the ram modules. EDIT: Chances are it will take 2 slots which be close to the next PCI-E socket. Also that plastic part should come off ( Clips ) too so you can fit even better fans to it like 2 120mm. |

$70 for this thing. Just a little more than I want to pay for 3rd party cooler. $50 would have been a fair price.
