Calling all TPUers!BOSS Needs help

So i need help troubleshooting problems with a PC at work. It is an old PC , some Dell Optiplex Gx270 or something with Pentium 4 proc.

now the problem is that the PC runs perfectly once it starts but if you shut it down, it starts but gets hung up on Bios, if it boots then it doesn't recognise the keyboard at bios password on startup.

What can be wrong ?

What software should i use for testing RAM from within windows ?

If you did a clean install of XP I say the mobo is shot. If you're using Vista I would try XP.

its the MB... maybe a bug in the bios. Sounds like the hang is related to detecting USB/PS2 devices and that keyboard doesn't play nice. Try with a different keyboard. Same thing happened to me and a cheapo USB stick... computer would hang on a cold boot.

Ahh, those old Opti's.

Try the Dell Diagnostics yet?

Starting the Dell Diagnostics From Your Hard Drive
Shut down and restart the computer.

When the DELL™ logo appears, press <F12> immediately.

NOTE: If you see a message stating that no diagnostics utility partition has been found, run the Dell Diagnostics from your Drivers and Utilities CD.

If you wait too long and the Microsoft® Windows® logo appears, continue to wait until you see the Windows desktop. Then shut down your computer through the Start menu and try again.

When the boot device list appears, highlight Boot to Utility Partition and press <Enter>.

When the Dell Diagnostics Main Menu appears, select the test you want to run.

Check your results, you may get lucky!

there are 2 things it could be that ive ran into often... the battery on the board could be going dead, or the cpu voltage is insufficient for the default multiplier.

what i mean by that second one is, like lets say you have a cpu like mine, and you wanna clock the FSB much higher than it would normaly be [200mhz] so you can up the FSB to 400mhz, and then drop the multiplier to 6x giving you 2.4ghz, which is totaly ok at like 1.150v, but when it first cold boots itl be cold booting at 3.2ghz on 1.150v so it will fail and you have to get into the settings in the bios and do quit and save and itl boot at 2.4ghz after that.

Quoted because I have a bad 270 sitting right beside my desk about to go to recycling.

Dell had offered free replacement mobos for certain models that were expect to have bad caps...

I know this is a stupid question, but have you tried a different keyboard? Have you tried unplugging all other devices that are hooked to the PC?

those are the first two things i would do before opening up the case and giving the dustbunnies a visit. I only say this because "the PC runs perfectly when it starts" tends not to be indicative of a failing mobo... more like "the PC runs suspiciously and does really, really weird and apparent sh*t once it starts"

motherboard batteries are sooooooo easy, they are larger watch batteries and cost almost nothing and on good motherboards they are easy to replace. looking at the board you cant miss it.

EDIT: holy crap that guy is right you have to try the bonehead stuff first! i didn't think to say that :?

One can never know... its possible that the Boss spilled his morning bevarage all over it one day and didnt tell you... or that his new USB coffee cup warmer(or equivalent gadget) is being recognized by a confused dell bios as a drive that wont respond, etc etc.

If the thing is telling you to set time and date then its the mobo cmos battery ...if its caps that are bad then you will notice that the caps on the back side of mobo behind the CPU are starting to bulge outwords at the top on the metal part ...I am Dell certified for all their equipment and I have had allot of exposure to the GX270 with that model its either caps or PSU or Fan failures...time frame on cmos shouldn't be bad but you never know(remember date and time).....Caps and fan failure and and PSU failing were the biggest hitters with that model ...call dell they may cut you a break if its caps and maybe even PSU....I have a gx270 and two 755's setting on my work desk that I use for work the 270 is okay for what it is.

Any error codes (beeps or lights) when the BIOS hangs?

Indeed, same with bad power supplies, plug on it, test ram only from a boot cd, if you must from windows, try OCCT or Orthos, they both stress ram and cpu pretty well.

Flash the bios.

Unplug anything that might cause issues, make sure the HSF is working well, those old 478 P4's we don't even need to talk about.
Also check the NB and SB chipsets and see if they are getting hot, I watched a NB chip on a 270 smoke literally!

There's your problem right there. Damaged Southbridge (either chipset or associated power circuits). Too much hanging off USB. Ihate the same prob once. Wated hours debugging, convined it was a software/driver thing... but it wasnt. USB had become unstable.

Could also try powered usb hubs, but always always start with removing ALL non esential accesories.
