ATI Catalyst 9.4 to Lack Support for Many Older Cards

ATI wants to diminish the list of supported graphics cards in the next release of Catalyst. With the release of ATI Catalyst 9.4, the plan is to exclude support for Radeon 9500, 9600, 9800, X800, X1800, X1900 and other desktop video cards. Catalyst 9.4 will also lack support for the FireGL X1/X2/X3, V3000, V5000, V7000 and FireMV 2200, 2250 professional cards. Of course owners of these models will still be permitted to download older drivers and use them happily. The ATI Catalyst 9.4 is set to be released next month.

Where did 9.3 go? I guess they couldn't fix all the glitches fast enough that were in 9.2 huh. I kept getting crashes from 9.2 and 9.1, I have 2 4870 1GB cards in crossfire by the way. I keep having to go back to the 8.12 hotfix drivers in order to keep everything stable. Maybe I should contact them and see if I can help them get better support for setups like mine by giving them info on my specs and other details that would probably be needed.

I'm surprised ATI supported those old cards this long, they are more than 5 years old. Owners of these cards do not benefit from new driver updates anyway, the drivers for those cards were perfected years ago. The newest catalysts only benefit the newer cards like 2000, 3000, and 4000 series of cards.

Yeah, I don't think the drivers for these older cards were being updated in anycase. I think this is just a case of removing them from the install package. Bit overdue I think as well. It will be interesting to see what is the size of the 9.4 CCC download package.

i wish you could download a single driver for a single card... that's way too confusing i guess for all the cards that are out. but the option should still be available.

I was implying that they would just skip this month and go straight for 9.4. That's kind of what it seems like to me but, maybe I am wrong and they will release the 9.3 this month.

Just because they stop supporting a card with newer driver releases doesn't make the card worthless. I've been running catalyst 7.4 on my 9800Pro and never have a problem. I'm suprised that newer drivers even support the cards they are dropping.

I might be wrong here but, as far as I know they keep the support for awhile because new games come out and if some one on an older card wants to play the newer game ATI adds support for the new game for the old card. Correct me if I'm wrong here by all means.

You are absolutely correct. Thing is, my 9 series card can barely play anything new. I do know that TF2 and some other games work fine with the 7.4's I'm using. All I'm saying is that if you have a non-supported card, there are many different releases of previous drivers you can use to get your card to work with pretty much anything.

Don't think so. any X1XXX cards and earlier. But, hey you never know. You can always try installing the newer drivers.

Why would Ati not support X1900?? Do they know how many people are they going to screw?? Those cards are capable of playing new games, but they do need the best support they can have from driver optimizations. Maybe that's what they want, make people upgrade sooner. Bad Ati, very bad.

Kind of off-topic, but using the auto overclock in Catalyst 9.2 actually works with my X1950 Pro. In 9.1 it just tried for like 5 seconds, but with 9.2 it's been like 5 minutes and it's testing it out and overclocking it. Weird, and now they're not going to support it in 9.4? I like being up to date, with my software but now I won't be able to

I can understand the 9000 series being dropped. I can even understand the x800 series being dropped, even though I own one and am kind of disappointed. However, the x1000 series is less than 3 years old. I own an x1950 Pro, and I don't even get 3 years of driver support for it. ATi used to have the best driver support, now they have completely turned around, and their driver support is complete shit. This really drives me away from future ATi purchases. There is no reason to drop x1000 series support other than laziness and to screw over customers in an effort to force them into buying new cards.

They aren't "more than 5 years old", some of them are less than 3 year old. They are cancelling support for any card over 2 years old, which really sucks. And the new drivers definitely affect older cards, they don't usually add any performance, but the general bug fixes for new games apply to the old cards the same as the new.
