BSOD, not just an error? I can see that being a OC-related crash, though it sounds like a power-to-card related crash, which doesn't make sense either given your specs. When cards crash from overclocking, you get an error message, it clocks down and lets you keep playing. Though my system has just frozen before from too much OCing, I always thought BFG's cards just suck.

nah, sometimes it BSODs and returns to windows in 800x600 16bit, and other times it jumps straight to 800x600 16bit...

Try your card at stick, as said above its normally related to OCing of the GPU. But if not, make sure the card is being cooled well and you can reinstall your drivers just to be sure.

It's not a 'BSOD' unless you get a big blue screen and have to reboot the computer.

You're just gonna need better cooling to keep it from crashing then.
As far as your framerate, I only get like 2-5FPS more from OCing my 8600, which is the similar experience of others. I'd like to see benchmarks that show even a 100MHz OC will give more than 5FPS increase. |

The best way for you to get more FPS will be a new video card, a new proc won't do squat. If you had a proc that couldn't push a 9800/4850 then I'd say get a proc, but since you have a fairly powerful enough CPU what you really need is a video card.
