Laptop for photoshop

Hey everybody,
I have a friend who needs a new laptop. He wants to use the laptop for his classes at college. The laptop must handle photoshop well, as well as video editing. He would also like the battery life to be 3 hours or more. The budget is around $1,400 (US). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance to anyone who contributes!

i dont no bout real recent expensive lappys bt im lucky to get two hours out of mine an the thing is when on battery it lowers the power from your cpu to save battery life meaning when on a battery it wont be able to any intense video stuff any time soon or itl jun out of juice quick either way

Yes it does.

ASUS G50V-X6 series with the extended battery.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834220483 that and then order the 9 cell battery from ASUS.

I have the slightly higher end A1 variant and I get over 3hrs with my extended battery and my laptop has more stuff in it.

I own one.

I get around 3.5hrs one the 9 cell battery. I dunno why it seems so impossible.

No it won't get that long if I am full loading it, but doing photo work with the screen at mid brightness, totally doable.

Thats the Sony Vaio VGN-AW2 series. I can really vouch for these machines.
I work as a Tech Support Analyst for Sony Vaio, and this machine is definitly the most stable. Nice 18" screen, a SSD for the OS and a 500GB HDD for the rest. Yes, it IS an expensive unit, but it really is a smasher.

I'm serious though. Poking fun isn't going to change the fact that you can get a long life high powered laptop.

3 hours isn't enough to do anything serious. A laptop isn't anything to be used for serious photoshop.

That is a totally closed minded statement! Tell that to any pro photographer and he will laugh in your face till he is out of breath. How do you think Apple sells so many laptops to photographers and the like, when I had one it had amazing battery life for photoshop tasks.

Just because you don't think 3 hours of mobile photoshop is worth beans doesn't mean we all feel that way.

I use mine all the time when in my school photography studio so I can shoot with the camera tethered, it's a hell of a lot easier seeing what I am doing on a large screen than pixel peeping a 3" LCD on my DSLR. Also I can work on the go for quick edits etc.

Besides, if there is AC available of course I use it but it is nice to be able to be free from that. My camera can go places AC cannot and my laptop is usually there with me. I can get a lot done in 3 hours with photoshop.

I'm not trying to give you crap, I'm just telling the OP there are options, where you just flat out said "It doesn't exist".

Its not a close minded statement. Its from years of experience. Apple sells to so many of anything to photographers "and the like" on an established reputation. A reputation they got years ago and no longer deserve.

Anyway a pro photographer wouldn't be caught dead doing any serious editing on a laptop due to the crappy calibration. A laptop is only good for in field adjustments.

I'm not giving you a hard time ether but I'm talking with well over 10 years experience. I'm willing to bet I forgot more stuff about photoshop than most "professionals" know.

This is such a no brainer it's a wonder this thread even exists.

You get the best specs that you can find in that price range.

Wild stuff is it not?!

In in those shoes right now as a Graphic and Video Game Design Student. Here is my experiances:

CPU is 95% of the matter. Without a good one, most stuff is toast. But here is my travel buddy: A Compaq c700 with a Duel Core at 1.6, 2gb of RAM, the Intel 950, and I do a boatload of Photoshop AND Maya modeling on it. My battery is about 2 hours, but I could easily get more on a higher cell battery.

All my heavy work I move to the q6600 desky. And Heavy Maya Renderings are done there as well. But for Photoshop, you can easily do up to the medium-high range of work easily. RAM matters alot.

So it goes CPU, RAM, Battery. There is the essence to a good notebook. Video Rendering is a different bird. For that I do not recommend notebooks for simply because for the price, you can do much cheaper on a desktop. Simple as that.

If this will be there only computer, then they are going to have to pony up. That link with the Q9000 looks nice if you can get a better deal. The quad will definably be nice for everything. Then agian, Duel will work fine for mobile. I would only shame you on the quad would it have been a desktop.

Hope that helps you.
