So you bought a card with a sexy cooler then ripped it off?

The cooler looks sexy yes, but it sucks for keeping the memory cool. VF900 + RAMsinks & HS = awesome though. You shall see

Thank you alex I think I scrolled past it. I was trying to picture it cause I was wondering if you could mod it to cool the memory better.

Another pic, this time temps with the VF900, clocks 700/2.05GHz. Even the little VF900 can return great temps at much lower noise levels than the stock cooler. A VF1000 would be the perfect companion methinks.

Next up: 3DM06 and Crysis Warhead results.

I received my Zalman VF900's last night and pretty pissed. Supposedly they were never used..I'd believe it if it wasn't for the fact that the fins all around BOTH are bent to hell and smashed together, and I can see the nice little squre left on the base from the GPU's. I did my best to straighten them out so hopefully it was a worthwhile 50 bucks for the two of them.

I also received my other 4830 from mlee and these cards run sweet in crossfire. I had to turn the clocks down, 650 core /1000 mem, a little due to the stock HSF's not handling the heat but I'm pretty happy with my 3dMark06 score

Hopefully I'll be able to get those Zalman's on today, should unless I notice something else very wrong with them.

Also thought I'd throw up why I turned down the clocks on the cards, Furmark 1680x1050 stability test:

After reading your thread I'm sorry to see you went through all that trouble. I'll definitely be throwing up an update once I get them installed hopefully today but I did check the coolers over to make sure there were no other surprises and so far all I could see was the fins were bent, but I've straightened them out. If I'm not happy with temps I'm going to pick up two of these, http://www.zalman.com/ENG/product/Pr...ad.asp?idx=283. I can find them on EvilBay but they are not cheap!

That's the limit of CCC and my temps were crazy. Furmark registered 83 Celcius before I turned it off during a 1680x1050 stability test. That is not acceptable.

KetXXX, how long do you plan on keeping this card? Is it a test or long time one? I have a mate looking at getting one soon.

lol, @ 750Mhz on the stock single slot cooler I register 81C Mem IO, 72C Core Temp, 73-74C Disp IO. (750Mhz Core, 1,200Mhz Mem (2.4Ghz DDR) ) This is on my HD4850...
So your cooler mustn't be on very good or airflow sucks. lol.
Who made your PCB btw? Mine was manufactured by InfoTek.

Both are Asus and it's the cheap ass Arctic Cooling HSF that is on these Nvidia cards, http://www.techpowerup.com/90548/ECS...o_Coolers.html. I think I have some pretty good airflow through my CM690(modded to fit 2x 120 Antec Tricool 120's on max).

That depends. If I can get the core to 750-800MHz it'll be a long-time card, if not, I'll probably add it to the FS thread and net a HD4850. After further testing it seems like cooling wasn't a major issue for my card, which is kinda surprising with the heatsinkless VRMs etc. My suspicions now lead me to the BIOS itself, something about the core stopping dead exactly on 700MHz, and being able to get the exact same clock frequency both with the GPU @ 1.25v and at 1.17v seems far too coincidential to me. I'm going to try a few different 4850 and 4830 BIOSes.

CALL TO ALL!

Can ANYONE with a HD4830 upload their BIOS to this thread? All you have to do is download ATIwinflash, open it, click the "save" button, then upload here

Have you tried flashing a 4850 bios to it yet? Kinda interested to see what happens and since I have two of them I might just go ahead and do it today.

See my edit. Yes I have tried a few different 4850 BIOS files, one killed my display so had to blind flash, the other flashed fine, but the ATi driver doesn't detect the card.

I have just been doing yet more playing and I'm absolutely right in suspecting the BIOS! The best I can get out of the stock XFX BIOS on my memory is 1025MHz, with a ATi BIOS I found my memory now happily does 1075MHz I tried shooting for 1100MHz but furry doughnut artifacts at 1100 Now if I could find a HD4830 BIOS that gives the GPU 1.25v like the XFX BIOS I bet I could hit 750MHz on the GPU easy. Furmark results with GPU @ 700 memory 2.15GHz to follow shortly.

Thanks, I'll be able to see if your BIOS is different to mine Heres the Furmark results with the ATi BIOS

ED - That XFX BIOS is exactly the same as mine was hoping it would be slightly newer/older, no such luck.
ED2 - I noticed something else with this ATi BIOS vs. the XFX BIOS, my temps get a lot higher with the ATi BIOS, which is odd, but does point towards that the voltage options on the XFX BIOS may be broken.

I tried to this morning before I went to work but I don't have winzip, I use winrar. When I get home tonight I'll get it posted. Right now I'm really pissed. That fucker on Ebay sold me something "new"...MY ASS!!! Missing a thumb screw, missing 9 of the memory heatsinks, and one of the heatsinks has a broken solder point! I'll try to get my money back but don't see that happening.
