GTX295 not posting?

I get a video card post alarm (series of short beeps) from my GTX295. I just bought the card used, but I believe it to be working. Are these cards picky about the PSU connections? I'm using one 6-pin and a dual-molex to 8-pin adapter.

FYI, when I first hooked up the card, I have two 6-pins in them, like you can do with the Radeon cards. I had a red LED and a blue LED on the card and it would not post. I changed to the adapter and now I get one green LED, but still not posting. It's not the system, as I can post and run just fine with the GTX260 I had in there before and with an 8400GTS installed in the system at the same time as the GTX295.

And for clairty's sake, here are the system specs for the rig I'm putting this in (it's not my siggy rig or the specs to your left):

MSI P6N Diamond
Pentium D 805 (currently at stock)
2 x 2gb G. Skill DDR2-1000
4 x 40gb SATA HDDs in Raid 0
LiteOn DVD writer
CoolerMaster Realpower 650W (PSU is rated at 650W max)

It is not a matter of CPU or ram stability, as the rig is stable to nearly 4 GHz with a crappy air cooler.

you think it could be the molex line doesnt have the required output for the card to run through the adapter? you have the same PSU i do i know you have an 8pin laying around

This is running off the CoolerMaster RealPower 650W. The Tt PSU is no longer here, and the QX9650 rig in my siggy is now running on a Silverstone 1kW. I don't want to swap the PSU out of the main rig to test, as I should have another 1kW PSU here tomorrow to test with if all else fails.

It is doubtful that the 295 is power starved but that might just be the issue with the molex to 6-pin. I mean it would be strange anyway since the 295 in 3D mode consumes way less power than a 4870x2. You've tried other pci-e slots and everything like that correct? Re-seat just to be doubly sure. If you've done that then ignore me lol. The only other thing I can think of is it's a bum card, but I really hope that is not the case.

Actually, it's one 6-pin cable off the PSU and one dual-molex to 8-pin adapter. I have it in the same (top) slot of the mobo as I had the GTX260. I have not moved it to another because cables, etc. are in the way of installing them there. I did reseat, and I also tried clearing the BIOS.

FYI, I updated the first post with the specs of the actual system I'm using this in.

I looked at the PNY site for more info & found this:

Quote:
Minimum System Requirements
  • PCI Express or PCI Express 2.0-compliant motherboard with one dual-width x16 graphics slot
  • One 6-pin and one 8-pin PCI Express supplementary power connector
  • Minimum 680W or greater system power supply (with a minimum 12V current rating of 46A)
Might be the PSU afterall

Highly doubtful, those system requirements are always blown way out of proportion. Plus, that PSU has 3x19A rails, does it not?

Edit, have you tried switching the molex connectors you're plugging the adapter to?

Test with the new 1kW PSU and let us know if that fixes the problem. I am curious as I have read several posts about how people should be able to run the GTX 295 while using less than the recommended kW.

How many more watts does a 9800GX2 consume? I have it on 700 watts currently. It might be your PSU.

No, but I did so on your suggestion. Actually, what I did was run one molex off of each PSU 4-pin cable. No go though

I got the new PSU in today and hooked it up. Card did the same thing. Then I took the other GTX295 (the new one I got today) and put that in. It posted in the mobo just fine with the new PSU. I hooked up the old PSU and and the new card posted as well.

How many GTX295's show up for each card in the Device Manager or GPU-z? With the Radeons, there is one per core, so there's four listed for my dual 4870x2 rig.

I have two cards in but I'm only seeing two GPUs

Also, the PNY that works has a green LED and a blue LED on all the time. The one that isn't working right only shows a green LED.

Your Power supply is as follows;
CoolerMaster Realpower 650W

However, the GTX 295 requires 680 Watt or greater.

My guess is that you need a stronger power supply.

The CM RealPower PSU is rated at 650W, but says 780W max. Besides, I got a second GTX295 that was able to be powered up by the same PSU afterall. It's definitely the card.

At least the guy is being cool about it, trying to work things through. He even said he would refund $10 to cover the cost of shipping to RMA the card.

295's are at the top of the hardware failure lists. I bought an open box 295 on Newegg and could not get core 0 to work. Crashes even when playing dvd's. Could fold the hell out of core 1, but nothing buy crashes related to core 0. RMA'd it and ship it off today back to Newegg. Lost $70.00 in the deal, but better than having 1/2 of the fastest card on earth working.
