4850 1gb ddr3 passive or 4770 512 gddr5 active?

Ok I am rebuilding a new HTPC my current setup it onboard HD3200 with a Phenon 9350E QUAD.

I am going to get a new Mobo 790fx ds5 I think it is and a new card, what would be the better option, a gigabyte 4850 1gb passive or a 4770 512 active cooled.

My HTPC allready has wireless networking and Asus HDAV 1.3 for BR playback, everything works great, but I am getting itchy feet, I wont be using it for gaming, though having the option there doesnt hurt.

What are your suggestions.

4850 is on par with the 9800GTX, so its the winner in terms of performance...

But, saying that, the 4770 isn't far behind, consumes less power and is cooler when both come with the stock fan....taking into consideration that the 4850 is passive and you have a quad in that HTPC case too, I'd take the 4770 as it will throw out less heat vs the passive 4850.

Except he's looking at a 3850. lol.

I'd go for the 4770, and just out a better heatsink on it if I found it too noisy.

Either he messed the title up or he messed his post up...either way, confusing.

I'd still get the 4770.

4770 when overclocked (mine is clocked at 850 and performs better than a 4850 stock ) is better, it runs cooler, and hell, overall a great card. Also cheaper

Yeah, until you OC the 4850. This is for an HTPC, so the passive cooler would be leagues better in this situation. Not to mention, it's generally not a good idea to OC an HTPC much, if at all, in order to keep heat and noise down.

eh, how well ventilated is your HTPC? if it has good airflow then bounce on the HD 4850, other wise i'd say HD 4770 since passive would give off more heat. Wile-E has the right idea though listen to the man with the longest lasting avatar
