Petition for AGP 4770
VOTE NOW
Today, a few people, including myself, got exited by the (mistaken) advertisement for the release of an AGP version HD4770 (PowerColor). http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=94122 IMO, lots of people would like one. Although I'm equally sure that on a global scale it isnt really going to add up to enough sales dollar for PowerColor to recover their investment costs. But who knows?! I would be interested in buying 2 or 3 of them if they existed. Perhaps others too. Perhaps even as a marketing stunt, a "short-run" of 10,000 cards would help them climb the "interesting company for enthusiasts" ranking. The knock-on goodwill might buy them some loyal customers for the future. After all, anyone upgrading an AGP system this year will definitely be in the market for a new PCIe based card in 2010/2011. And what do they say about Customer Lifetime Value? So this is a little petition (for fun). Answer YES to one or more of the options above if you would/might be interested in buying a PowerColor AGP HD4770 if it was available. Sorry, the second option should read: "I would consider recommending it to a friend who was still on AGP" Last edited by lemonadesoda; May 15, 2009 at 11:59 AM. |

I got a friend still on AGP, and he needs better graphics. I'd recommend that card to him.

As long as the price point stays the same across the board. It's sad to see GeForce 7600's going for $60 because they are AGP. If I had a friend who wanted an AGP card AND the 4770 was AGP at $100 I would tell them to buy it, no other card, this is the one!
Any idea on a price point for the 4770 AGP version? Huge impact there...

I just have to say this...and please don't flame me for it...but if you or a friend is running AGP it is time for an intervention. :P

While nobody can comment on how HD 4770 is faring in the market (just as yet), it is too early for partners to break away from the reference design beyond a point. AGP is a big change. An ideal condition for a HD 4770 AGP to come out would be when the HD 4770 PCI-E is fairly popular in the market, when AMD lets partners design their own PCBs by issuing design kits (before which letting them sell overclocked HD 4770s), and inter-AIB competition which has saturated to a point where an AIB is looking to squeeze whatever it can out of the SKU. The same conditions favoured the birth of HD 3850 AGP.

already did that with my mates Amd64 3200+, 7800GT 'gaming' rig - he now runs a C2D E7400 @ 4.2Ghz & my old 8800GTS 512 (clocked faster then a 9800GTX+)

What is your mate's new rig pulling on lightsmark 2008 and 3dmark06? Is it rally stomping all over an AGP system... http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=57401. Look at how a 3850 stomps all over the 7800. I imagine a 3850 in his old AMD system would have given him 80% of what he is getting now, but at 30% of the cost.
(I'm sure it is, but take a look at those Q6600 AGP scores. Then imagine what a 4770 could do... and ALL THAT for just $99/EUR79) |

OMG, I just ran lightsmark, very pretty, but it made my GTX260's brain hurt, it was screaming at me
![]() Average 746.76 FPS lol. And @ lemonsada, how did you get a mobo to take a Q6600 and an AGP slot?

Check out some of those benchmark figures. It keeps up with, or even passes, many Q6600 setups on PCIe3850. Pretty cool stuff. Only problem is that 865 chipset will not go over 300FSB. But if you are a "stock player" then you have a great system.
For 99% of situations, other than synthetic benchmarking, stock Q6600 is fast enough and the botleneck is the HD3850. So a HD4770 would suit the system perfectly. |

I'm amazed it can even boot. I thought the oldest chip to support a quad was the 965.

Break down and get a new mobo, CPU and PCI-E card. Time marches on and hardware is cheaper than it has ever been. For what I spent on an X800 XL AGP in early 2005 ($300) you can get all three components.

I believe there are some older LGA775 boards that are AGP, so those would still be plenty capable. And even the upper end AM2's would deal with a 4770 just fine. Not saying a better proc would hurt, next Gen top end cards though will start to be a different story.

I'd definitely buy one, I have multiple AGP motherboards and with this card purchased, I could bring life back to a lot of my otherwise redundant machines.

laptops are in a different category. theres not much you can do to 'upgrade' a laptop. you just have to ditch it & get a new & more powerful one. & ones that can play CoD4 can be fairly expensive.

I always felt the last card for the AGP interface should have been the X1950pro.
I still have my Sapphire X1950pro rocking in my old P4 system without fail. Only thing I'd be concerned about is the cost of the HD4770 As new technology becomes more set in the older technology becomes more expensive to upgrade as the companies want the consumer to upgrade thier systems. New AGP cards and DDR ram versus the cost comparison of PCI-E and DDR2 ram are a prime example of older technology overpriced. |

i865P could support Pentium Extreme Edition (Pentium D with unlocked multiplier and HyperThreading enabled), hence it could deal with four logical processors, real cores or not. ASRock was clever, and supported Core 2 Quad (4 logical processors, 4 real cores behind the scenes). Innovative, underestimated bunch of people.
