New cpu cooler for my Q6600....

Is Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme STILL the best out there? And do they still need to be lapped? Need it for overclocking.... im just not to happy about getting a shitty one that needs to be lapped

As far as I know it is, but these new megahalem coolers have been released and they are putting out some good numbers . . . lapping wise, you only really need to do it if your base is imperfect / uneven, check it with a razor blade for flatness.

It isn't necessary to lap a TRUE, they work very good as they are. Having said that, I might have a go at lapping mine one day.

The megahalem cooler looks quite interesting.....

bundyrum&coke: It is, if it makes a temp drop which, in my case , is very important as I'm going to overclock....

Not using any voltages now. I have everything on Defaults. I had it once at 3.8 Ghz, but can't remember the voltages.

If you want to go past 3.8 Ghz, watercooling might be a better choice.

I'm not to fancy about water in my pc. I'm to stupid to set it up anyways....
I'll go with the best aircooling, and see how far I can go

True is a champ but they aren't lapped. I lapped mine the other night and it took me 4 hrs and was a lot of work but it helped my performance. I didn't realize how cupped the True was until I started lapping.

You will have an epic struggle to overclock much higher with the T-Power, they are really built for Duo's, not quads.

It works great though. I was even able to boot it on 4.00 ghz, but it was unstable of course...

On my Pro Ive booted sort of stable @ 4.2, Im hoping I can get stable @ 4.1Ghz, 1.6V when I do my next round of benching. She runs 100% Rock solid stable 4.05Ghz, 1.58V though. Thats on a cheapo ASUS board.

You've booted 4.2 Ghz on Air with ASUS P5Q Pro?

dam, it takes me 1.48v just to boot in 3.6ghz and run 3dmark06 but i still can't get it stable for long periods. though i haven't dedicated much time to it either, as i thk she would do it stable at that voltage or less on a P45, this 680i blows for oc'ing.

Yeah, with my system specs. My rig was on for roughly 10 minutes at that speed, got frightened by the temperatures so I shut her down

My overclock / voltage range:

1. 3.2Ghz @ 1.20V

2. 3.6Ghz @ 1.32V

3. 3.8Ghz @ 1.38V

4. 4.05Ghz @ 1.58V

5. 4.2Ghz (maybe higher?) @ 1.7V+

i put 1.7v thru my e4300 to try and get it above 3.6ghz but it wouldnt play ball

i still love the temps my ifx-14 gives, i know i have a duo but it normally idles only 1 or 2c above room temp plus i could slap 3 fans on it if i needed more air flow.

I hated that board with a passion. I think that I sold it in less than a week after I bought it. It might be a good benching board apparently, but for 24/7 stability thats another story when you have such huge steps in voltage options and not being able to fine tune the GTLs. Sorry had to vent about that pos board.

Anyways, buying a TRUE and not lapping it is a waste of money, imo. From what I have heard and seen the megahalens (or however it's spelled) needs lapping as well. There is a few pics oer a XS taken during the lapping process. It's not as bad as a TRUE but still not completely flat, but atleast the mounting system is a million times better.

Thermalright bases are really bad. Lapping and pressure mounting makes a huge difference. Even my HR-03 GTX needed to be lapped badly. I have never heard of a TRUE with a flat base, they claim that the cupped base is a feature.

If you want a solid cooler that you don't need to lap pick up a Xigamtek (or however it's spelled) Dark Knight. It has very simmilar results to an unlapped TRUE.

Thanks for your reply, BababooeyHTJ And you are totally right about the Biostar It goes high for OC but stability is another story, no shit. I guess I'll grap either a thermalright or a mega. I guess, I can't avoid the lapping. I'll go with it then, I just don't hope I'll screw up, as I usually do....

BTW: kyle2020: Do you use stock coolers for mosfets and chipset?
