Nvidia 8800gt Stock Cooling Mod???
When I bought my second 8800gt, it came with the reference cooler on it. It was a BFG OC edition. I had gotten used to my VF900 on my other card, so I wasn't happy with the temp's. Now, I had an idea. I am not running heatsinks on my memory chips, so I got the idea to take the thermal pads off of the reference cooler. I have noticed a good reduction in temps on that card. The temps are a lot closer to that of my new HR-03. I will post some pics when I can. Just thought I would throw that out there, and see if anyone else has experienced this, or if it is even a good idea.

i believe the thermal pads you speak of simply act as a thermal connection between the memory chips and the single piece stock cooler.
your best bet would be the aftermarket air cooler, some memory heatsinks, and you can pull apart the stock cooler, and cut off only the vrm cooling heatsink for excellent results as seen here: http://forums.techpowerup.com/showpo...1&postcount=11 the whole post is good : http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=89018 but i think the most benefit the stock cooler will be to you is either to leave it on, or do as per that post. my 2 cents. |
