Intel Core i5 Lynnfield 2.66 GHz Tested

Intel's quad-core Core i5 2.66 GHz processor based on the Lynnfield core, was tested on an Intel reference-design P55 motherboard (DIBX_CRB) by forum members of XFastest. The processor accompanies 2.80 GHz and 2.93 GHz variants higher up in the series, and is expected to be priced at US $196.

The test bed was put through 3DMark Vantage (Performance and eXtreme settings), Cinebench R10, Queen, Photoworxx and AES tests of Everest. The GPU is of little relevance, as the CPU test 1 is what is to be looked at. At Queen, the setup with 4 cores and HyperThreading enabled, edged a dual-Xeon L5320 (8 cores) setup. It proved to be roughly 25% faster than Core 2 Extreme QX9650 at Photoworxx, and scored marginally higher than it AES. More pictures of the motherboard at the source.

Pshh 2.66ghz, I bet I could hit 4ghz with an ASUS board. I'm getting the urge to build an i5 crunching rig again

So, QPI links, tri-channel memory, and Turbo mode make the difference but the question is by how much (compared to the Core i7 920)?

Nice price tag. Not so overwhelmingly high like i7 here...

well... when you can get i7s at 215$ tax included sometimes at Microcenter, you wonder if the mobos are a hell lot cheaper or not for the i5 xD

Looks like they have it disabled, it would be more than 13K CPU if they were using physx.

Hmmm. I purchased an i7 920 D0 for $199.99 that benches @ 4.5GHz on air with 1.4v 1.31 vtt. I use the exact same settings to bench 4.7GHz with higher end cooling. Unless P55 boards are in the sub $100 range I don't see where this chip is gonna make any impact. I'm sure it will overclock like the i7 920 but if you run the same everest benchmark with 45nm Yorkfield you'll see that it competes with it depending on the overall cpu overclock. Nice chip just not sure if there's much of a market for a new intel platform that's not cheaper or out performing whats currently available.

I think he actually meant to build a crunching rig again. I knew what he meant, but it just sounded funny.

Phenom II X4 955 Killer?

How does this new Intel offering compare to the Phenom II X4 955? I found a site that had the Phenom doing Pi in 21sec. Vantage CPU score of 11000

Is this CPU comparable/better than AMD for less $?

Given Intel's rep for overclocking, is this going to be a budget screamer?

I'll stick with AMD,I'll stick with AMD,I'll stick with AMD,
