Hello! Im new to the forum and Im also new to "opening computer cases and seeing whats inside" in general...hope i posted in the right section...


First off, here's my specs

Thermaltake Armor Black

My problem was that as soon as I started playing Call of Duty 2 my PC became a jet plane in terms of noise level and since the problem started with a graphically intense application I always thought it to be the video card's fault...

After months of thinking it was the video card I decided to keep my rig open durring a Mark05 session and test each fan (blocking them with my finger) to see which actually made that godzilla type noise...


I was suprised to find out its the motherboard's chipset fan!!!

Can you please help me on how to disable this evil noise? Im guessing they dont sell third party mobo chipset fans...sigh

seem to be an nvidia chipset problem.. needing whiney high speed little fans to cool em down..

not so easy to do much about either.. i would call it a mobo design fault in your instance.. they probably think gamers dont give a wotsit about jetplane noises..

what puzzles me is why my via chipset has no fan and gets barely warm to the touch.. odd..

First, you have pehraps a problem the chipset of the DFI is really more hot of what you can find on other NF4 motherboard,.. but it's absolutely not loud.
But.. try put a 120mm fans close to the chipset fan for send air in direction of it.. this will automatically decrease the temp of the chipset, and normally the fan should not go at his max level..
In second, verify in bios how is set the fan and at what temp bios decided to put it on full level.. verify your temp and look if your fan is not allways at his max cause the temp is allways too much high...

verify too something don't touch the chipset fan ( like the GPU PCB), it's pehraps just this make your fan is loud.
it's really hard find a fan for replace it on DFI, i know some waterblock are specially designed for it, and i have see some use special fan for this chipset too on it, but i don't know where they have find it..

try replacing your chipset fan...I think it uses same plug as "universal" (not huge) GPU coolers.

Yes, you can replace the fan but verify the space between the GPU PCB and your card like the card is just in front of the fan ( and touch the box of the fan...) difficult find a chipset cooler have same spec...

I have the expert board, and the chipset fan really does sound like hell. In BIOS, you can set the on/off temps, try setting it for something like, constant on at 35 calcius and above, constant off at below 25C. I think that's what mines set at anyway, I'd have to check to be sure.

I liked the idea of switching to water cooling but to find a brand that supports everything I have is quite a mess...e.g. for the video card do i need to worry about the vga ram or not?

Do you know of any fan that can substitute the one present?

I have been advised to use this VGA cooler but I really have no idea how it would fit in the chipset "holes" (pins?) nor where to find one in europe...sigh

all depend.. for exemple the Danger Den Maze 4 ( full acetal) is used offtly on 7800-7900 and ATI X1800-X1900, it's don't cover the DDR of the GPU, me i have 2 system H2o separate for the CPU and GPU with 2x Eheim 1250 Pump +2 rads for each circtuits.. I use a Waterblock Innovatek Coolmatic designed for the X1800 and X1900 series.. it cover the Core, the memory + the mossfets ( voltage regulator)..¨

But many use a simple Heatsynk for use on DDR like zalmann or OCZ + a Waterblock for the core... Boths is possible and have good result.. It s clear a waterblock covering and cool all the part of a GPU if your water sys is not optimal will not cool the core of the GPU at same level of a simple waterblock.. like the water will heat more..

try this....if your not into clocking disconect the fan power cord.use machine passive as is.if yoy clock.Are there still those blue orbs for geforce 4s,cos one of those will work

Koolance are pretty good for having the ability to cover all your parts like ram etc. They are available in europe the only downside is they are kinda exspensive systems. But you get what you pay for. They also sell the extra heatsinks for the back of the card

Finally understanding that I will never be able to build my own water cooling system,
I wanted some help regarding what type of fan do you suggest putting on this chipset

Since I have never touched the inside of my computer (I know...I know...) I would like to know what the substituting proceedure would involve...

Would I have to remove the mobo? i.e. would i have to rebuild the pc back together? If so, what are the probabilities of a noob actually getting everything to work

I realy doubt you can take a chipset cooler without taking the motherboard, and i know that the cooler does noise like a tractor, but i think there are chipset coolers for that board, just don't remenber where

to take the chipset fan off,i would imagine the board coming out as it can be awkward.

honestly, try just running the pc with the little fan cord pulled off the main board,you can always plug it back in later if you get lockups or crashes whatever.

If you arent into lots of clocking your mainboard,then it would be actually okay to experiment with passive cooled(no fan) chip.Just use the fan and sink as alittle heatsink.if it gets too hot to touch after playing games or like i just said,locups crashes.then go into pulling her to bits.but yeah get it quiet.
Also putting your rig on water is easy,like leggo/meccano, especially with the chips having a good cover these days(ihs).All it takes is to have all the right stuff sitting on the floor in front of you,then its overclocking thats hard.

i'd be worried about that... the point that it will begine to freeze is way above the max safe temperature, and the Heatsink is too small to work effectively as a passive cooler. I'd go with what pt said and get the Arctic cooling chipset fan.

as MRCHU said, installing a watercooling kit is a lot easier than most people think.

hmm, it could be a small AC fan, and a heatsink that another company's made perhaps.

get DFI to send you a replacement fan, you could also try grabbing a NF2 chipset fan like the one that could be found on the AN7 and see if it fits.

I would go with the thinking of Ketxxx..I would first see if DFI will rma the chipset fan only based on the noise, you may have to rma the whole mobo...Now on the other hand I run my chipset fan at 100% and cant even hear it over my two x1800 cards running as I have thoughs fans set to 100% as well; Oh ya actually I have all fans on my PC running 100%.Good luck !!!!
