What is it? I've heard of MSDN but that is a $500 annual renewal. I've heard of technet, but assumed it was another name for MSDN.

Some products might be, some products may not be. It probably depends on what it is. Some might be a demo, some might be full featured.
A lot of them are probably a full product, i.e. they send the base product to IT guys to look at and play with, and if they demo it to higher ups, get site licenses and such.

Probably up and down

Sorry dude, but I can't read your mind. I will however assume from that statement that you got it through Technet.

so after the year is up, how much will MS want to renew it?

I know it sounds like I'm being picky, but I only care about the OSes. I hate MS and only use their shit when I absosmurfly have to.

I can get a copy of Vista Ultimate for around $100 new and fully licensed - no upgrade or one time install bs. I figure it will be at least a year before the first W7 service patch comes out and by then I can probably upgrade for $50-100. Right now I only have 2 machines and on one I'm happy to run XP forever. If I set up a third machine, then it becomes worthwhile looking to subscription arrangements. That's why I know the pricing on the basic MSDN OS-only subscription - $800 first year, $600 to renew.

So if the renewal is going to be priced anything like MSDN, then it's just not worth it to me.

BLUF (Bottom Line Up Front): I got the my original Vista X64 Ultimate ISO from Technet Plus and still use on some of my rigs along with legit but NFS Office 2007 Suites. The biggest deal out of this if you are into servers is the FREE legit and not time-bombed copy of their Server OSes. This is free for the next 365 days and you will have the chance to renew it for $249 (normally $299) since you're already a subscriber as of today.

OK, cool. that works out really well for someone who has more than one machine and is too much of a coward to jump to Linux.

I appreciate the info. I'm signing up. I already had a windows live sign-in even though I never actually bought anything.

So yeah, I'm trying to get a legit copy, and all it does is download a ASPX file, and not too sure on what to do...is that a legit/legal question to ask?

Edit: nevermind, I believe I got it. But it was from Microsoft's direct download thing, so not too sure if it is the real deal.
