Yet ANOTHER SSD product line from OCZ. How many have they got now? I cant remember they have so many. Talk about brand/product confusion. They really need to simplfy it into a maximum of 3 lines, SLC for enterprise/enthusiast, MLC enthusiast, and MLC economy.

They should have said : "We made it for the High-End market" not for the average consumer.

What i cannot understand with SDD's is the fact they say they last longer than typical HDD's but carry a much lower warranty.

When thats the same then i will consider buying them. For now i'll stick with HDDs with a 5 year warranty.

its because HDDs are backed by years of knowledge and experience. hdd companies know exactly what to expect from the quality products they make.

ssds are still too new to know exactly how long they will last. most MTBF ratings on ssds are only estimates based on test groups of drives. there are almost no statistics returned from ssds yet so no one has any info to go on as far as longevity is concerned.

yes your right but it was not to long ago people saying these drives would last longer although really they were talking out of there ass as no one really knows just yet.

I guess we will in about 2-3 years time . Well have a much better idea anyways.

well, in perspective,

there are no moving parts which means no wear. based on that fact alone ssds have hdds beat as far as MTBF.

the problem with ssds is nand flash memory is subject to a certain amount of times it can be erased. how fast you get to that point depends on how much you use the drive.

ssds in a web/file server would almost certainly be dead far faster than ssds in my bench rig which is used only a few hours a week.

IMO they need to come out with a crippled SSD controller. Either artificially limit the current controllers or put it on a Sata 150 bus or something. 150MB/s reads and 100MB/s writes. Some hard drives might be able to come close in performance, but the access time on a 'slow' SSD will still be insanely faster than any hard drive. 'Slow' SSDs will still be better than hard drives and would be more affordable....

SSD price is all from the NAND flash (and the suppliers aren't making much profit on it), not the controller. Controllers cost $6-$12, don't know how much the Intel and Samsung controllers are since they won't let us buy them :P
