No sound on desktop PC

I have absolutely no sound coming out of my desktop. The mute is not on, and all the levels in Volume Control are normal. I installed a new video card (ATI Radeon 9800) today and that's when all of the problems started. I used to have an ATI Radeon 9200 and the sound worked fine when that was installed. I have tried updating drivers and all that but nothing works. Please help!

Double check speakers/headphones are plugged into the correct audio jack.

My dad went for like 3 weeks without sound once, because he plugged it into the wrong one.

Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices, Audio tab, and select the appropriate Default Device.

I had to do that when installed my new Ati card.

nice catch mlee. ATI's drivers add ATI as an audio device and sets it as default = no sound. Swap it back to the realtek or whatever you use and it should magically reappear.

We'll see if thats it, I'm 3/5 for this exact same problem with Ati cards. The other 2 were motherboard issues.

EDIT: 3/6

@Charper2013: I'm not all that great with computers so I'm not sure what kind of motherboard I have.

@Dippyskoodlez: I tried plugging in a different speaker and using headphones. Nothing.

@mlee49: I tried that, it looks like everything is working right but still no sound.

@sneekypeet: How exactly do I do that?

9800 series cards do not have an audio device built in. I would recommend trying to reinstall your sound drivers.

Take a screenshot of the device manager (Right click "My Computer"-->Manage-->Device Manager) to see what's going on. To take a screenshot hit PRTSCRN, open Paint and hit ctrl+v to paste the screenshot in. Save it and upload it at www.techpowerup.org. Copy the link here.

@sneekypeet: So if I had it installed would it fix the problem? I'm sorry for being so slow, I've just never had this issue before.

No the ATI driver, if it was there, would be the issue, I think in the control panel>>sound...it is not set to play the realtek audio.

@CrackerJack: This is probably going to sound pathetic, but what exactly is a motherboard? I mean, I know what it is, but how do you know what kind you have?
