WD 2TB Warranty?

This reviewer on Newegg claims that WD voids the warranty on the 2TB drive if you use RAID. True or Fud?

Lots of info for raid setup on WD site. I can't see how it would void the 5 year warranty.

I thinkie rumors, I read someone was told that there is a special "series" of WD drives to be used in RAID, but darn if I can find anything from them. I think that's BS. Write a note in thier forums or CS.

Well, first of all, how would WD know? My moto when it comes to failed hardware, is don't tell them things that might void the warranty...

Also, the green edition drives are not recommended for RAID use for a reason. The green edition drives cause a lot of RAID controllers to falsely claim that the drive has failed. I believe this is due to the high number of ramp loads the drive has, IIRC.

WD just wants you to pay extra for the same drive. If they actually did that, I think there would be a big lawsuit.

No there wouldn't, I'm sure they are covered by the classic "using this drive outside of it's intended purpose voids the warranty".

newtekie, what exactly is a ramp load? Could running these drives in RAID actually give it a higher fail rate than normal?

It is when the head leaves the disk surface and is parked to save power. The green edition drives do it whenever the drive is idle. The drive keeps track of the number of times this happens in the SMART data, once the number gets so high, a lot of RAID controllers will warn that the drive is failing because they don't know that this is by design.

Also, because there is a latency caused when the drive has to unpark the head and move it to the drive surface, if the latency is too long, it can also cause some RAID controllers to say the drive has failed and drop the drive from the array.

It will not decrease the life of the drives, at least not directly. If you have a RAID0 array, it can cause the array to fail, and a loss of data. If you have a RAID1 or 5, or something else redundant, it can cause the array to have to rebuild often, which can have an affect on the drives lifespan.

You might want to consider the Seagate Barracuda LP 2TB drive instead. It is faster than the WD drive, and doesn't suffer from the ramp loading issue as heavily.

Which is why you never have power saving enabled and don't buy those crap "green" drives. On 24/7 is the best option for a HDD, period. Why M$ and everyone else wants us to constantly power down drives, I have no idea.
If anything is going to make a drive fail besides heavy use, it's powering on and off all the damn time.
