DiRT 2 PC Delayed for DirectX 11 Tweaks!

This is great news for us tech junkies! Now lets see some DX11 cards!

Quote:
DiRT 2 PC Delayed for DirectX 11 Tweaks

Once slated to arrive alongside its console counterparts in September, the PC release of Codemasters' off-road racer DiRT 2 has been pushed back until December so that it can "benefit from an extended development program to take advantage of DirectX 11."

"We believe that the DirectX 11 feature set is too compelling to ignore, especially considering how much more it can add to the visual experience for PC gamers," said Codemasters technical officer Bryan Marshall, who further cited "key new technologies such as hardware tessellation, multi-threading and Shader Model 5.0."

Codemasters added that "hardware tessellation will further improve the appearance of water and other surfaces as well as crowd animations," with SM 5.0 "enhancing key image quality parameters such as depth of field, ambient occlusion and shadows."

Supported in both Windows Vista and the forthcoming Windows 7, the latest version of Microsoft's DirectX technology hits later this year, as does hardware that enables it.

Then they should delay the Xbox360 version as it can use DX11 Tesselation... which means they can add more visual quality with less FPS hit.

The 360 cannot do DX11 nor DX10. You want that you have to buy a PC.

Definately nice looking in screens, I'd love to see a demo in action! Cool they are taking the time to implement DX11 to it, I'm curious at what cost though? By that I mean performance-wise? Sure my card won't fully use 11 or touch SM5.0, but I'm still curious how this will hit the current gen of DX10 goodies and the first gen of true DX11 GPU's. Good to hear they're giving 11 a go, could be the beginning of a (more) beautiful thing!

I didn't say full DX11, I said DX11 Tessellation. The Xenos along with every R500 GPU has a Tessellation unit on-board but de-activated via the vBIOS.
The Xbox360s is ACTIVE and used in some games like Assassins Creed.

The way dx 11 does tesselation and the way the ati xenos gpu and ati hd2k-4k tesellation units is incompatible. A lot of xbox 360 titles use tesellation anyway and i'd expect it to be already incorporated in the 360 version without the dx11 additional code. The tesselators are not deactivated either - the 360 one is used and the ones in the ATI hd series cards needs specific code putting in by the game developers to activate the tesselation support, which isn;t usually done by developers due to the minimal market penetration of hd series cards (most people who play games still only have dx9 cards still )

Also looks like i've got my excuse on why i need a shiney new dx11 gpu now "but i can't play grid 2 at max without one..."

I edited the post-
R520- Introduction of the Tessellation Engine (which is now the basis of the DX11 version) but it was disabled...
Xenos-R580 with XDRAM or w/e it was called.
The Xenos had improved yields so they activated the TU. MS was like.. "hey I like this... lets use it later."
ATI had a newer more dev friendly TU already developed and MS was like "Ok, lets just make it a DX10 thing and use the Xenos one for DX11."

Oops, i misread the R520 comment - read it as R600 for some reason - sorry

It will be nice to see how effective the dx11 tesellators are though since the 360's unit is mostly focused on allowing the graphics to look less outdated - on an up-to-date gpu the visual improvement will be a lot more noticable.

An article about it from IGN: http://pc.ign.com/articles/100/1001454p1.html

If other designers catch on to DX11 quickly, this will be a big boost for ATi/AMD.

Sorry guys I'm not buying the 360 can do DX10 or DX11. When the 360 was released there were not even DX10 cards available for the PC. Now you're telling me the 360 can do elements of DX11? Its a console. Not a magic upgrade box that keeps up with the latest PC advancements.

It was designed with a Tessellation Engine active in it. Microsoft used this design in DX11. Which is why the HD2/3/4 is not DX11 compatible and the HD5 series from ATI will launch so much sooner than Nvidia's "GF2xxxx?Asfd" (who knows what they will name it)...

Yeah and from that very same article it states the following...

Quote:
The answer is to use the power of the GPU to generate this additional complexity—hardware tessellation. Industry watchers were a little disappointed that hardware tessellation didn't make it into DX10, but it will be fully implemented in DX11. Note that this is the one feature that absolutely requires DirectX 11 hardware. When Gee was asked if the hardware tessellator currently built into AMD Radeon HD series GPUs would support DX11 tessellation, the answer was "No."

Gee went on to explain that DX11 tessellation was more robust and general than the solution built into current AMD GPUs. The AMD hardware uses essentially the same as the tessellation unit in the Xbox 360; DX11 tessellation is a superset of the AMD approach.
So there you have it. The 360 does in fact do tessellation but cannot support DX11. DX11 uses a more robust solution that is not available in the 360.

"DX11 tessellation is a superset of the AMD approach"

Meaning, it added more stuff, but the basic layout is exactly the same.

Turn off the annoying blur, tone down the flare and show more realisim in the cars details and it might be worth it.
