Policy Change: External Images in Signatures

We have brought about a small change in our signature picture policy, which helps make sure every signature picture adheres to our guidelines and protects you from spammers who collect IP adresses.

You will no longer be allowed to use signature pictures that are externally hosted. The [IMG] bbcode will not work in the signature space (i.e. display an image from an external source), other than a white-listed (approved) source for dynamic images.

This limitation will only be enforced once you change your signature within the User CP, existing signatures will not be affected.
After a grace period (~7 days) we will change all external image tags so that you need to edit and save them, which enforces the changes.

You may also use the Upload Signature Picture feature, which ensures that the image fits within our guidelines (no larger than 500x100 pixels, and no more than 19.5 KB in file size. It can not be animated).

Dynamic Images
A dynamic image is that which is hosted by a service such as HWBOT, a Folding@Home or WCG team score aggregation service, or GameTracker (which posts your gamer statistics).

If you want us to approve such dynamic image sources, please make your requests in this thread.

Thanks to btarunr who typed up this text while I was coding the plugin

That kind of sucks, my folding image won't work now...

Edit: Nevermind, the whole URL will fit now, I used to have to tinyurl it to make it fit in the character limit.

It was tinyurl, which I highly doubt would get approved considering it could really link to anything...

But before, it was the only way I could get my sig to fit in the character limit since the original URL to the image was so long.

Has the character limit been increased?

Thank you for posting this up. I never added in folding stats before because I wasn't sure if Dynamic Sigs were allowed. This clears it up nicely.

I'm a tad confused about the above comments - are you saying if we have a sig on an external site at the moment we have 7 days until this change is enforced? Or we have 7 days from whenever we next change our sig?

Also if you are forcing it on everyone (which i assume you need to do) can we be allowed to have PNG format sigs on TPU please?

Sure, as long as they're ≤19.5 KB in file-size.

what they're saying is you have 7 days (less, now) to either change it, or get its host approved.

But it was deemed "ugly" therefore I do not wish to upset the forum decorum.

This has been implemented. All non-approved sigs had their [img ] tag replaced with [img disabled]

in a next step (week/weeks) we will clear all signatures that have "[img disabled]" in their signature (= user didnt care to fix his sig)

Just switched to tpu hosting, i had to save my sig as horrible jpeg as i couldn't fit it into the space reqs as png - can anyone suggest a format which would keep better colour information than jpg but will fit into the memory space we have available?

(ps don't take this post as me complaining about the move to stopping outside hosted sigs, it's a lot better this way i just wish we could get a little more storage space for our sigs, though i suspect it's a bandwidth saving measure vs. a storage saving measure?)

**edit**

newtekie1 has helped me fix my sig to a decent quality now

TPU's servers have no bandwidth or storage constraints, though the idea behind the 19.5 KB limit is to make sure users don't have to download an awful load of data on signatures and avatars, from several users in a given thread.
