ASUS eee PC
What do you guys think about these? Does anyone own one?
Right now I have a 17'' HP with 2 harddrives in it and all of that good stuff. Looking to downgrade because all I will be using it for is College work such as word processing, internet browsing, and some solitaire. Thoughts on them? |

I actually just bought an ASUS eeePC 1005HA. The quality on it is good. I enjoy the keyboard more than my Samsung NC-10. I run it with both Windows XP and Ubuntu 9.04 netbook remix. It handles both very well. I also use this laptop to play 720p videos (using a monitor). However, to get it to play smoothly I do have to overclock it to about 1.8 Ghz, which it does without a hitch (can achieve 2.1 stable). While the battery life isn't quite as good as the NC-10, it is adequate. ASUS claims that it can get 8.5 hours, but in real life usage it translates out to about 5-6 hours. PS If you install ubuntu prepare to bang your head against the wall trying to get the wireless to work. Hope this has helped you out.

I used to own one of the very first ones. The Asus Eee Pc 2g Surf. And to be honest I didn't use it because it only had 2gb SSD in it lol. But Asus have seen the error of there ways and have made a very good laptop. They are surprisingly snappy with there Atom N70 CPU in them and 1gb RAM (maybe 2GB, as nearly all allow you to manually upgrade them yourself now) is always nice. I would advise sticking with XP or Lynx because of the RAM side of things.
Also they improved on the screen size by putting in a 8.9 or 10 inch screen instead of the old 7 inch screens they had that couldn't display a web page fully. Also I would look at some videos on how the video playback is, but I believe it is good. Finally you may want to look for a model that has a good size keyboard as you will be typing your assignments out. On the 2g surf that I had, the keyboard was quite small but within 2 hours of me doing some general browsing I was rapid on it (I do have quite small fingers though). I think an all round winner for me personally in the Asus range is this one.. http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/10-As...indows-XP-Home It has 7 hours battery life, 160gb hdd, 1gb (upgradable) RAM, 10" screen and a webcam for your Skype calls and what not.

Sounds about what I'm looking for.
Battery life is definitely a major concern for me.. Want something that is going to stay alive for a while.. |

I own a 1000HA, nice little fella. The keyboard is pretty damn good, and overclocked to 1.9GHz it can handle NFS3 lol. Tip, use Chrome as browser, the sleek frame improves website viewability a lot.

I suggest installing Tiny Xp on it because the smaller footprint makes it faster and takes up about 400mb of hard drive space, which allows for more space for media.

So you like the 1000HA then? That is probably the one that I would be the most interested in due to the price.

I love it. I was a little worried about typing comfort, but its incredible. Also, the display delivers a very crisp image, I have not watched a video that was not youtube yet tho. But for pictures its a very good image. As for battery life, I have it since two weeks more or less, it came with the battery half full. Used it for several hours, didn't recharged it as of yet.

I guess for like $25 putting another GB of RAM in it might not be too bad of an idea..
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834220551 Might go with that one with the newer Ion in it.. |

More RAM = more betterness
I packed a 2gb stick in my eee, too, you notice Windows loading faster and everything is smoother. Its a wise deicision seeing as it doesn't cost the world.

So you say the keyboard isn't that bad?
I plan on typing a decent amount on it and I do have large hands/fingers.. What about a mouse? I guess just a normal one with a USB dongle? I had a real nice Logitech Bluetooth one but I guess I can't use that anymore.. Also I'm beggining to consider one with a SSD in it.. |

![]() Now the SSD debate. I guess I really won't be storing anything on it as I already have a 1TB connected to my desktop.. So the performance increase would be great. Just got to debate if I want to pay a little more or not.. |
