Try the Coolermaster paste that comes with it. Just about anything is better than the Intel HSF.

Stock clock 4670k should idle at 20-30*C and load at 50-60*C with a 212.

Put a dot of the paste like this

and then when you screw the 212 down it will spread under the pressure of the screws. Make sure you remove any clear plastic label on the bottom of the 212.

I usually squeeze it out so its a slight line north to south.

Thanks for the helpful image man! You guys have really got me out of a jam here. Looks like I'll go with the stock paste and see what CoreTemp tells me after that.

I should have been more skeptical of the default Intel cooler from the get-go - those push-pins are easily in the top 10 dumbest designs I've ever seen on any piece of hardware, computer-related or otherwise.

Bad news: for some reason, CoreTemp now causes my computer to lag out and lock up. I don't think is related, though, it seems it's a problem many are having. Any idea how to fix? http://www.tomsguide.com/answers/id-1820104/core-temp-causing-freeze-crash.html

Good news: Installation went well and (using CPUID HWMonitor to see temperatures since CoreTemp is bugged) I can see that idle my temps are a health 30 C and in-game no more than 53 C. So fingers crossed that was the source of the problem (I'm assuming it was based on your assorted comments) and things will be running smoothly from here on out!

Thanks. Looked like that solved the issue, given that I've been playing lots of SoM & Skyrim for long periods of time for the past several days and have not experienced any crashes!

Awesome! I love when people come back and give success stories to close the loop.
