1090t or 955BE on 780G chipset?

I currently have a Phenom 9950 running on an ASUS M3A78-EM 780G chipset and am looking to upgrade either to the 1090t or 955BE. I plan on keeping my system and motherboard for another 2-3 years.

I am wondering if the 1090t would be severely handicapped on the 780G chipset. Would I still notice a considerable performance boost over my 9950 if not now then a year down the road?

780G is a very capable chipset, I doubt it'll bottleneck your 1090T in any way.

If you have the funds, then the 1090t would be a good choice. Its much faster in all aspects to the 9950; games, media, encoding, it runs em all faster. U will need to updated ur BIOS first to support the 6-core. Other than that, there are no "handicaps" that i can see by using that chip. overclocking may not be as high due to not having a SB750/850, but thats not a show stopper.

1090T will be just fine on 780G only thing is if you plan to overclock any its going to be pushing that poor little board over 3.8ghz.

honestly for you i would just get a 1055T or 1065T preferably a 95w version

I agree. I killed my poor little Gigabyte 780G board with a stock X4 9750 after a few months of normal usage, and the VRM area was nearly black at that point.

this one quotes 140w cpu support but its not got any VRM heatsinks and is a pretty standard 4+1 VRM setup

Thanks for all the responses.

I don't intend on overclocking the CPU. My main dilemma right now is choosing between the 1090t and the 965BE; in most benchmarks the 965 performs on par with the 1090t. However, I want to know if the 1090t will be a good way to future-proof my system ... it is about $40 more, but will the added 2-cores and turbo boost feature actually make a difference a year or two down the road?

So right now, I can choose between:
Phenom 965BE + RAM Upgrade to 6GB ($190)
Phenom 1090t ($200)

1090t's work just fine on 780G, tested it myself for a few weeks before i got my 890FX board.

its the best choice as eventually you will want/need to OC, and having a black edition 6 core is perfect for that.

I am leaning toward the 1090t.
Would a RAM upgrade be beneficial? Right now I have 2x2GB DDR2 sticks in dual-channel, I am thinking of adding another pair of 2x1GB sticks for a total of 6GB. Or would this just be a waste of money and cause stability issues on my chipset?

no stability issues, no gains either unless you're running out of ram a lot.

almost a waste of money, since you could upgrade to DDR3 and get 8GB for not that much extra cash (and a far more feature packed motherboard while you're at it)

Generally speaking the chipset will not impact the performance of the CPU enough to make a measurable difference outside of a benchmark. If your motherboard supports the 1090T get it, its the better option anyways if you want a rig to last 2-3 years.

I don't know what you use your computer for, but outside of specialist applications and tasks 4GBs is enough. If you do plan on upgrading the RAM I would shoot straight for 8GBs of ram for dual channel. 6GBs of ram is single channel on AMD rigs - although it will still work without stability issues.

i use my 8GB of ram easily enough, being a heavy gamer and multitasker. depends on your usage, 4GB aint enough for me.

secondly, you CAN make 6GB run on all modern systems in dual channel - you just run 2x2GB on channel 1, and 2x1GB on channel 2.

modern chipsets also support some weird 'channel and a half' tech, where having say, 2x2GB in channel 1 and 2GB on its own in one of channel 2's slots, will actually run somewhere between dual and single channel.

basically, the first 4GB of ram will be accessible faster than the last 2GB in that situation. its odd, but it does work.
