Benchmark Scores Its fast. Enough.
Is there enough benefit in using 16GB RAM VS 8GB?

I game, do some video and photo editing, occasionally play with music, the 4GB I have was helped tremendously by using SSD's and overclocking.
I just bought a used Formula 4 890 board as my board is dying slowly and can't quite afford a whole upgrade.

So if I buy a 16GB kit to use in the future with a new build will it be worth it, and will this chip even handle it?

And as stated what is a reasonable price for a used set of the highest speed DDR2 I could ever find.

Thanks

By the way that chip can handle 16GB
but it cant go higher than 1333mhz that's for ddr3 :)

More info:

There is also a type! PC3 10600 ddr3 it can only use this just make sure to check before you buy otherwise it will be useless :/

OK, I appreciate your help, but I'm a bit beyond the basics, I understand that 1333 is stock, but nothing I have runs stock, it will be overclocked, and the sweet spot seems to be about 1866 with tighter timings, so I am asking if there is a benefit in using a 16GB kit VS a 8GB kit that is capable of good timings, as in will the forced 2T vs 1T make a huge difference, as there are no 16GB kits capable of running 1T taht will reliably work with this chip, but if I found some Samsung memory and later went to Intel since it overclocks like a mother, is it worth the extra on this platform?

All those are with Samsungs..pretty sure.
Thuban will be OK with RAM up to about 1920 Mhz.

I sold my OCZ Blade 2x2GB 1150 5-5-5-18 1.8v for $75 on Ebay back in March. You should still be able to get at least $50 up to $100.

99% of games don't need more than 8GB, but it depends on how many apps you have running in the background. If you're the kind of guy that closes everything while gaming or the kind that leaves 16 tabs open, 2 other games open and a movie playing in the background. Maybe 16GB will be a need in a year or 2. A 1100T is still a good chip so yes it can handle 16GB and easily!

Cheap, fast, reliable, 2x4GB,1866MHz, CAS 9 and room for OC.

I'm running 16GIB of ram myself at 2133. A x2 555 can handle 16-32 (mobo limitation only)

Strictly for gaming 4GB is enough, 8GB is the new mainstream though.

Regarding 8 vs 16GB I don't think there's any benefit save for people who actually need the memory for professional picture and video editing. I have an 8GB kit on my daily use PC and Windows uses about 5GB max for caching (cache memory is released as soon as requested and doesn't count towards your used memory) and even after taking into account my memory usage while browsing the internet listening to music, etc., I still have ~1GB free. If I had 16GB I would just see a lower memory usage percentage. I've heard that if you use an SSD Windows caches even less (about 2GB only).

EDIT: I would go for a 1866Mhz kit although a 1600 kit will do fine. To get your memory to 1600Mhz you'd need to up the Base clock to 240Mhz (240 * 6.66 = 1598) which not many motherboards can get. For 1866 you'd need a base clock of 280Mhz.

EDIT2: I see that you're getting a new beefier board. Go for a 1866 kit.

Benchmark Scores What are benchmarks anyway?
I run 16gb of 1600 on my 1090t rig at 1333. Thr cpu in oced to 3.6 and it does all it needs to and runs games just about as well as my fx 8350 rig does. I ran it with 8 gb for awhile and didn't see much difference when I moved up to 16gb. If you haven't got a board yet then maybe you could look into a am3+ board with a 990fx chipset. With the 1866 memory your looking at and the am3+ board you set yourself up for a future upgrade in cpu when you want. The fx procs are getting cheaper.

Its a really good priced 890 board, I wold like it to last me for another year before I should be able to do a full upgrade, motherboard/CPU/RAM/SSD new pump and blocks.
