Atm I've got a gigabyte 7870, and am not exactly happy with the settings I play on, on Bf4. My much preferred resolution is 1080p and atm to get stable frame rates in every multiplayer map, I play with only 3 settings at ultra and everything else lowest. No mantle, dx11. New games such as watchdogs is about to come out and I'm just wondering if I should upgrade. I don't wanna spend anymore than $420

hi i dont know why you cant run bf4 on ultra without lower some settings but i think is good to see what nvidia and amd are going to do.
Nvidia have already announced the gtx 880 so wait and see xd.
p.s if you use aa at 4x instead of 8x you can have good performance improve + see what settings you have in the catalyst like ssa activated

If you're not happy gaming with your present card and you have money to spend then I would upgrade. I'm not familiar with AMD cards and there may be a better choice from AMD than the one I would suggest but have a look at this EVGA GTX 770 Superclocked. I especially like the ACX cooler.

Edit: It's likely going to be the end of this year before the GTX 880/870 come out.

Just everything else is maxed. Oh and the resolution scale is only at 100% which is half way not any higher that would be nuts. I live in Australia ans I've been looking around. My local store is dd computers and I was maybe thinking about getting the 280x but the actual question is, is it worth spending around 400 for a 280x when I currently have a 7870? Will I see massive gains? And big question of all will it last for at least another 3 years?

BF4 only runs well on a few rigs, nobody is happy with their BF4 performance, because its BF4.

the 280x is a rebranded 7970 but with some new stuff like mantle and true audio but if you dont play over 1920 x 1080 stay like this and try to overclock your 7870 and your cpu a little.

Try turning off motion blur and see if that helps.

it's for you to decide.
Well here's my perspective.
Your 7870 is a bit faster than mine 7850.
Mine 7850 in crossfire is the same if not a very little bit better than a 7970.
The R9 280X is a re-branded 7970.

So for me going with the R9 280x should see double the performance that I have now (HD 7850)
For you 75% or 1.5 x the performance that you have now.

As said before, BF4 runs like ass on most machines, the 7870 is a pretty good card for 1080p gaming, but it's becoming very much midrange. The budgeteer in me says you should stick with the card for as long as you can, and save up some money for something ballin', but the enthusiast who joined this site for that reason, tells me you should buy a 770 or a 280X.

tuunade988 I didn't know you lived in Australia. Man, they really stick it to you guys with the prices of computer components. If you decide to wait until the end of the year or possibly early next year you should be able to get a 20nm card from either camp that will make a much bigger difference in performance for your $400.

Hmm, never tried playing BF4, this thread makes me think that's probably for the better if it doesn't run well on a 7870, since a 7870 would likely put my laptops gpu to shame.

Might be a good bet to wait for Nvidia/Amd 20nm in late 2014/early 2015.

For BF4, do you run AA or post processing? I switched to post processing to get more fps [slight reduction in image quality].

Well you don't have to put everything to ultra. Play on high and turn off the AA and the other things.

@tuunade988 I know they talked you out it in your other thread , But I did see some very good improvements when i upgraded from my x6 1055 @3.6 to the fx8320 in BF4 all ultra settings 2xaa with my 7870 in Multiplay , esp in the map you are taking about

The Extra CPU and Memory speed/grunt lets me get more from the gpu ( also seen massive improvements in other online games i play : esp World of Tanks can get over 60fps with more graphic settings maxed out , which i could'nt get before , had to turn down graphics settings to get even close with the x6

I think the difference is more to do with Improved mem speed more than anything ( nearly double)

They haven't announced anything. Everything is rumored and speculation, and whatever specs have been "leaked" are fake.

Money, money, money... What to do... if i upgraded my Gpu to a 280x i would see a lot more gains in frame rates than if i were to upgrade my cpu and motherboard. In the end they both cost around the same, although my motherboard is like only a 2.0 usb and sata 2, which is holding back my SSD and HDD speeds.

You could upgrade your motherboard to a 990 board and overclock your 1100t, and add another 7870(used). Later on you could up the cpu to an FX series.

When I had my 1055T at 3.64, I to would see dips into the 30's with an R9 290. Mantle helped significantly, never below 60 @ ultra 1080P. A new video card wont help much, you are CPU bottlenecked in this situations, just check your GPU useage and it will show that. My 8320 @ 4.5 does better by a good bit. So CPU or wait for AMD to fix mantle performance on the 7000 series. A R9 280X is still 1st gen GCN, so mantle is still not fully functional (performance wise, as far as I know)
